Good question on HJ today.

Does getting the FIRST MOT done early affect the due date of the next one or would it be the anniversary of the date of registration. OR is the first MOT if done early dated 3 years to the anniversary date of the reg?

The answer on HJ is as clear as mud to me!

Anytime up to one month of the 3rd birthday the MoT will last 12 months + x days.

Go before the beginning of the 12th month it will be dated that day in 2020.

Car Reg on July 1st 2016 - Mot anytime in June & the MoT date will finish on 30th June.2020.

Go on 31st May & the MoT will expire 30th May 2020.

There's a lot of wrong information given out on the HJ Q&A. Usually in the insurance section, but this one was plain wrong too.

As an example, here's one of my cars' first MOT:

First registered 28 April 2011.

Date tested 17 April 2014.

Expiry date 28 April 2015.

One of my other cars is having its first MOT on Monday. It's going in a couple of weeks early. I'll be astonished if the expiry is anything other than the anniversary of first registration.

Officially you have to show the registration document to get mot expiry put forward like this, and previous mot in subsequent years.

Since it moved to an online system showing the V5C is no longer required to get the extra days between test and expiry.

My car had its first MOT in March this year.

Date of registration 28 March 2016

Date tested 9th March 2019

Expiry date 27 March 2020

The MOT computer system should automatically put the correct dates in if you test early / up to 28 days before its actually due.

The other car is already showing on the MOT history database. It says:

Date registered 28 June 2016.

First MOT due 27 June 2019.

So I'm confident the first MOT will be correct, even without me taking the V5C in.
