Suzuki Vitara - Breakdown service - Ethan Edwards

Just had my renewal through from the (three letters long ) popular breakdown service. Been a member since 1991. It's been getting progressively more expensive. So just joined Auto A#d. 60 quid. Looks to be about the same cover.

Anyone else use Auto thingy? I've tried really hard to avoid naming companies!

I've tried really hard to avoid naming companies!

Why?, as far as i am aware there is no problem unless you are slanderous towards them.

AutoAid now up to £60?

That's risen sharply, seems only couple of years ago it was £38, when they decided to ditch the previous pay and reclaim system i wrote to them suggesting it might encourage more 'frivolous' use of the service seeing as it would be free for consumer at point of use, never received a reply and now i'm wondering if increased costs is being passed on.

Always my first choice, purely on price. I have never actually needed to use them.

I paid £48 earlier this year, but I know there has just been a huge increase in price as they are now part of Autonational, a company that also offers traditional breakdown cover.

I am just renewing car insurance and packaged breakdown cover is almost £80 for less cover than Autoaid, so it is still good value.

Just for info - there would have been nothing wrong if Ethan had named the RAC in this case. He was just stating a fact, far more effectively than if he'd abused them.

I used CBC last year - didn't have to use them, so can't say how good they are.

Have used auto aid once 2 years ago to the day in fact ( I know this as it was my youngest child due date and I was desperate to get home to my wife) they turned up in 20 minutes or the local agent did I should say. Took my car to a local garage of my choice as I wasn't far from home then dropped me home.

I think the £48 I paid is good for piece of mind and excellent value.

I am currently with Start rescue, and got my renewal (European) up from £52.75 to £75..

On phoning, reduced by £10.. then i pointed out that reduced to £58 if i went via a comparison website. would not move, so cancelled and will take out a new policy.

Those of you using European cover, beware, some companies (AXA for one) will only pay up to £100 for the compulsory tow to a safe place on Some European roads.

Out of hours can be 190 euros....

It would seem that it's gone up from £48.31 (this current year) - to £59.99.

Bit of a jump.

But 50 quid less than the renewal I was offered. Still great value.

Have to say that even at £60 and despite a 'bit of a jump' (to quote myself), with two cars and the Mrs and I driving either car it's cheaper than anything else I've come across - I looked at Start Rescue plus a few others a while ago and if you included the doubling up of cars and drivers the others are much more.

I've just been through my annual negotiations with the AA.

Yet again they have attempted to put my renewal price up by an astronimical amount. After a considerable amount of discussion I've managed to get this price down to just over what I'd paid last year. However, this is still just a fraction under £100 for Roadside and Relay.

The AA told me that they offer the best breakdown service and they have the highest number of vehicles for any breakdown organisation. This is probably true, actually, but, then again, you clearly do have to pay for that! If you are unlucky enough to suffer a breakdown then you certainly do want good service, there's no doubt about that. You never know how good (or Bad!) a breakdown organisation is until you've used them.

You can now actually look for Breakdown Membership on a price comparison site! I did this and discovered that I could obtain Roadside and Recovery membership for about £20 upwards! However, when you read the reviews for these companies they are, as you may-well expect, absolutely appalling! I certainly wouldn't consider ever joining any of them.

I did shop around and noticed that, during my investigations, Auto Aid had rocketed up from £48 to £60. This happened very recently and is a very significant increase.

The AA do currently have an offer but it's only available for new customers and can't be used for renewals. But, if you were thinking of joining from scratch, it does offer a significant saving on their usual joining fee:

You also currently get a £20 M&S giftcard!

Might possibly be of interest to someone.
