makes me feel pleased I've enjoyed the opportunity to travel and visit these places before the nightmare of all the rules and regulations come into force, and feel sorry for the younger generation having to put up with such aggravation.

As it happens I've visited Antwerp many times over the years, by cruise ship, to drive through en route elsewhere and as an overnight stop, it's a lovely city with an iconic railway station (nearly as grand as Grand Central Station in New York).

Without getting into the politics of Brexit, it is disappointing the EU cannot co-ordinate the various city wide emission schemes so that one registration covers all.

Quite, I already need space for Swiss and Austrian toll + the German and French emission stickers. I'm running out of unswept windscreen space!

Some of the fines are eye-watering (especially Italy) and now follow you home.

I find it slightly amusing that this low emission zone in Antwerp, the second biggest port in europe after Rotterdam, is a stone's throw from the enormous dock area where the ships of the world load/unload. Their auxiliary machinery will be kept kept running, generators, pumps hydraulics, heavy fuel oil tank heating boilers etc.

They will have to use light fuel oil when in port but that is not as clean as road diesel.

I doubt that they are classified Euro 5!

The Antwerp system is run on ANPR cameras and we know how good they are....We will be there 4 days. Not using the car while in town. But Colchester to Antwerp is a lot of faffing about by any other means. So car it is. Access to the hotel needs to be registered.

Will enjoy the odd beer and steak frites

We traveled to Ghent last year for a 2 day break. Lovely city, highly recommended.

The only problem we had was that in recent years the city centre has been declared car-free. On many of the prohibited routes the only indication was a sign in Flemish indicating the restriction. We spent nearly an hour trying to get to our B&B and at one point drove through a restricted road by mistake. Our efforts weren't helped by using an out-of-date Sat Nav.

We expected to receive a penalty notice for our infringement but a year later nothing has arrived. If the authorities in Antwerp are no more diligent as those in Ghent then you may not need to worry.
