How annoying...but at least you got a good result out of it thankfully.

Don't you just hate supermarket car parks....peeps just don't seem to care anymore.

Good result. How did you find the cheapest place?

Interesting that Dents R Us were the dearest. I have a tiny ding in a wheel arch from when I dropped a petrol, pump nozzle. Some road maintenance dork parked in the service station making it hard to get in, and refuel, and I tripped while carrying the nozzle. Tiny ding, but annoying,

Well done ORB, you can't beat the little local places, devoid of managers receptionists and carpets and free machine coffee.

Rare that cheap paint repairs are up to scratch. A good friend recently used one nearby to paint the rear bumper and n/s/r quarter on his Ford C-Max for £85 and it’s a total mess. He thinks it looks ok but no way it’ll pass muster when he hands the car back at the end of its PCP. It’ll be flaking off in months. If you do find a genuinely good body shop that’s cheap(ish) then they’re worth promoting as they’re a rare thing.

Mine was a dent half an inch long and deep enough to "break" the paint.. total area less than about a 20 pence piece

The local bodyshop that was £216 was inc vat and has large up to date premises and several receptionists... courtesy cars available....

The indy is 2 brothers in Colchester in an old industrial area, no real office or reception, bit untidy, but the job was nicely done, and no vat.... but no pretty receptionists and no courtesy cars, and I had to book it in nearly a month ago...

I have seen a few repairs over the years i was in the motor trade and I am satisfied with the job.

The people i use are a small bodyshop, which has given up on insurance work in the main (though would accommodate a regular) and given up on much of the trade work too, who think they can pin a decent pro bodyshop down to the 'lasts a few months' mobile costs, and no you don't get a lasting finish from a largish repair painted out in the cold no matter how 'smart' they might be, though the smart people are handy for pushing paintless dents out and general touching up and of course they come to you.

My little place has now morphed onto the classic side of things instead, the paint finishes are excellent, they did the whole front bumper on my car which was clouted and creased by anonymous shortly after i bought it, you would never know it wasn't original finish, done many jobs for me over the years and family too, no complaints.

Little places like these are usually stacked out with work, i doubt they would take kindly to public promotion as such, preferring the recommendation route, where i go they seem happy to carry on the size they are, suits us all.

Old rover boy,

You wouldn’t be so kind as to let me know the name of this body shop would you?. I’m near to Colchester and in need of some paintwork. The wife’s Zafira is left parked at Colchester town train station during the week and it is a magnet for people opening their doors into it!.

I got a quote for 316 from one of the mobile repairers but I’d be interested to get a quote from your outfit.

Rare that cheap paint repairs are up to scratch.

Dads Micra suffered car park damage when it was about 2 years old. The paint was completely down to the black plastic on the bumper with deep gauges. Minor damage to paint of rear wing where the bumper had flexed. Local bodyshop wanted over £400 to replace bumper and paint the whole of the rear of the car and part of the side.

Took car to local smart repairer on an unfashionable business park. Quoted us £55 cash to sort. I was not expecting it to be brilliant but was wrong, it looked like new. 6 years later when we sold it the car still as good as it did the day it was repaired.

The £400+ repair would have been no better.

Why? small businesses with low turnover can not (don't have to?) charge vat under a certain turnover..

Yes, £85,000 turnover is when a business needs to become VAT registered.

I have had Chipsaway & Dentmaster in the past.

The experiences have varied from great to very poor with Chipsaway. Very poor was how I would sum up once franchisee owner who came twice & finally his employee who fixed out the original scratches & his boss's botched attempts.

Best Chipsaway experience - SWMBO was dog walking & came back to find the rear bumper with "streamers of paint" hanging from it. Car was about 2 years old & immaculate - invisible repair still 100% when I resold the car 13 years later.

Dentmaster(twice) & local dent man ( multiple) 10/10 every time. Same man for some 25 years - he has a few garages he visits & comes when he is next at my local Ford to fix up trade-ins for re-sale - no travel time £30-£50 a panel. A bag of bent wires & magic skills he irons out the dings & dents as long as there are no breaks in the paint - normally 10-20 minutes from start to finish.

If I were to book my car in at the local garage that he does you can add a huge mark-up+ VAT. He limits his turnover to £60K - £70K by working 3 days per week - as he says his modest business costs are an old Volvo estate (with lunar miles which he can service & fix himself), his phone & diesel.

After some careless driver side swiped us down the full length of the car, we wanted the car to go into Ford but were told we would have to pay more if we did not use the insurance approved repairer. Expecting a decent job we left it with them. The car had to go 30 miles away to Rotherham to a “good” repairer. On its return the paint was dull and the wrong colour. Off it went back for another few week until it eventually came back looking pretty good. 9 months later, rust was starting to show on the edges of both side doors. (Only the repaired side). On a 4 year old car I was 99% sure it was due to a bad repair. I could not be bothered arguing again as we were ready to change so off it went. Next time, we need paint doing, it will be a local body shop for me.

I would like to know opinions as to whether it's worth paying to have bumper scuffs repaired at all on our cars. Our focus is 9 years old and has cosmetic damage on the front bumper which doesn't bother us, although it is noticeable. Car is worth what? 2k? Would I ever recoup the couple of hundred back when I come to trade it in or not? To me it feels like dead money. Our 12 reg Civic has a very poor paint job on the back bumper which would look much better redone, again I feel it's a waste of money, but I may be wrong. I have no interest in having them pristine, they are just tools which inevitably get scuffed, but am I correct?

MG ZS 2017 - .. Dent repair - oldroverboy.

My car was nearly new when I bought it, so was worth doing as well as the fact that it irritated me. If it had been a bumper scuff, I could have hidden it with some rubber mouldings or "protectors", but 7 and 9 years old, let it go....

I agree VAT is unlikely to be the issue, but HMRC could investigate someone being paid in cash from an income tax point of view.

I don't think the Inland Robbers look on this forum, but there's a very small outside chance. I'm all for naming someone who has given good service, but perhaps better not to mention that they were paid in cash.
