Toyota Auris Hybrid - Range Counter reduces using EV - Derek Hanrahan

Hi, while driving solely on EV (under 40MPH, green EV indicator continuously lighting up) I notice that the Range Indicator reduces the range by exactly the same number of miles by which the odometer increases. I've tested this repeatedly, on the flat, down hill etc. I don't understand how this can be. The range of the car at any one time is usually measured by the level of fuel in the tank. As the level of fuel reduces so too will the range, which is all common sense. Why then, if the car is not running on petrol, does the range reduce? I may be missing something here but I'm left quite curious by what I've observed.

Thank you.

Derek

The range will be calculated to include battery range so your remaining range will reduce while running on electric as the battery charge drops.

Had a couple of Auris hybrids, and the range indicators are about as useful as chocolate teapots. The readings are not linear, but tend to go faster as the tank empties - this is a Toyota characteristic to ensure that the tank is never completely empty apparently (a big problem with hybrids) - there's usually another 100kms available when the indicator shows empty

My 66 reg Toyota Yaris 1.33 Multidrive S (CVT but not hybrid) has a fuel gauge with a similar characteristic. Upon filling the tank and first engine start the range is reset and calculated using the previous average computed mpg and is typically 450 miles. The range number reduces linearly with driven miles down to half tank if the vehicle usage is similar to the previous tankfull. The range is adjusted using the current new calculated average mpg since filling and quantity of fuel remaining. After half tank (typically 250 miles) the fuel level and calculated range drop more rapidly (non linear with miles driven) and the fuel level warning light shows at around 430 miles (the range shows around 5 miles left). At range zero a refuel is about 33.5 litres giving a true mpg of 59 (the computer shows 61). The tank has 42 litre stated capacity and I have three times obtained 500 miles from a 37 to 40 litre fillup. Overall consumption for last 3000 miles is 57 (computer says 59). At 10000 miles the engine still feels very tight so this may improve.

Fuel gauges designed not to let you run out of fuel seem to be a Toyota thing, my Landcruiser doesn't have a fuel display on the OBC as such, the fuel gauge takes ages to get to 1/2 then drops very quickly to under a 1/4 which is when you start to look for fuel, it takes a long time then to drop nearer to the zero point, even then at worry level i've never managed to put in more than 60 of it's 87 litre capacity.

I won't even mention mpg figures here, as the sad tears of 'what am i doing' are almost rolling down my cheeks reading the figures above ;-)
