Yaris Hybrid - best way to purchase? - Sam M

I'd like to minimise the depreciation on purchasing a used Yaris Hybrid. As someone inexperienced with cars, what year would you advise going for - mileage should be about 40k?

Also I would want to purchase using a car loan, where would you recommend I purchase - somewhere such as Car Giant or elsewhere to minimise risk?

Thanks very much

Why do you think buying from Car Giant would minimise the risk?, surely there is just as much risk buying from them than any other used car dealer?. I'm no expert, but to minimise the risk, i'd have thought buying an approved used example from a Toyota dealer with a full Toyota service history would be the most risk free option.

As for the loan, best option surely would be to search who offers the best interest rates for a loan, as this can change on a fairly regular basis (and not to use the dealers finance, which will almost certainly not be the most affordable choice).

Maybe they mean that a large national supersite has just as much of a reputation to uphold as a franchised dealer. Unless the buyer has a decent amount of car knowledge (i.e. mechanic-grade), then buying a likely older, higher mileage car could still be problematic as supersites don't have the specialist equipment that a main dealer/specialist has to ensure a car is in the best condition.

Not so much of a problem for a standard petrol Oriental car, but more so for a more complex European and/or diesel one. Unsure about hybrids, as normally Toyotas are relatively bullet-proof.

I'd still rather pay more for an approved used one from a main dealer, as long as I knew the dealer was competent. I doubt if Car Giant would have the electronic SH available to them either, which I definitely would want when considering buying such a car.

The cheapest way to finance a used car outside of using savings would be to take out a bank loan which can be had from most high st banks at 3% APR if you take £7,500 or more. Dealer finance on used cars is always higher especially on PCP’s. It’ll add thousands to your deal with typical rates closer to 10% APR.

Car Giant has an admin fee of £199 if you take their finance or pay cash but £399 if you borrow from another car finance provider, basically one that doesn’t have an agreement with them to pay them commission so keep the fact that you’re getting a bank loan to yourself though this fact shouldn’t make a difference it’s only if you use another car finance firm. Still poor show though, ditto the “admin fee” which is simply adding £200 to the advertised price and is a sharp practice I’m amazed they get away with.

I remember the hissy fit trading standards had with us over a few cars that had been reduced on our advertising but someone had forgotten to drop the screen prices. There was no argument with the chap who made the complaint, we were more than happy to sell him one at the advertised price but he was only trying to cause a stink. Point was that if we advertised it at a certain price then we had to sell it for that. I don’t know how anyone gets away with these cheeky admin fees. Would you accept it anywhere else? If your newsagent tried to add an admin fee to your daily paper where would you tell him to go?

Thanks all, which year would you go for?

As new as possible, good advice from the others (as normal) a bank loan and buying from a main dealer is the way to go, never knew car giant charged a admin fee...cheeky sods!

Can't tell you what year to go for without knowing your budget. As paul says, as new as possible is usually the best option, but given you seem to be set on a car with 40k miles (?), i wouldn't be ovely concerned about the age, especially buying an approved used example from a Toyota dealer with full history.
