I'm considering buy a car from private. ad posted to gumtree. The guy at the meeting is not the owner in the logbook. Apparently the actual owner is a friend not living in uk anymore. I've asked to rename the owner on registration document, otherwise I won't buy the car and he's done it online and will wait for new logbook with his name. that said, the logbook he showed me didn't have the V5C/3 part.

Can anybody tell what that would mean? When I asked him, he of course said it wasn't relevant. it seems that paet is filled in case of sale of the car dealer, putting it to the insurance company or to fight. What does that mean?

Walk away.

Unless he can prove ownership you won't get title. Car may be stolen or owned by a finance co. Have you checked outstanding finance etc?

I wanted to do all the checks but from what you are saying not sure it's worth spending the money and might just walk away. sadly as seemed a good car

Whatever name is on the V5 is not proof of ownership and this is clearly stated on the V5.

This saga is already full of pit falls and Gumtree is full of iffy transactions

what is the most common proof of ownership when buing a used car?

It’s not possible to prove 100% who owns the car, but if the sellers name and registered address on the log book are the same as where the person lives there’s a good chance he has legal title to the vehicle. I would back this up with ID from passport or driver license.

Bill of sale, or receipt from when the current owner purchased it.

I once sold a car for SIL, but I insisted they had a new V5 with my address on it.

The V5C/3 is the bit used when sold to a trader - I'd run for the hills

Agree he’s obviously a car trader pretending to be a private individual to avoid giving a warranty ( I.E private sale sold as seen) . He probably does nor declare his profit income to hmrc either. Definitely walk away there are plenty of other cars out there to choose from!
