vw golf mk5 1.9 tdi - Fuel pump replacement issue - Keith O'Hare

Hi all, new to this forum.

Pulling my hair out with fuel pump issue, Fuel pump went couple of weeks ago and mechanic replaced it with new one. Then i started to notice a loud whining noise periodically mostly when driving around the town and stopping an starting and when idling and in low gears, also the fuel display that tells me how many miles is left in the tank was fluctuating quite a bit, which it didn't do before and i noticed slight loss of power sometimes or it was less responsive, and after some hard driving (when im delivering chinese at night) its worse and the smell of fuel comes into the cabin.

So i brought it back he replaced the fuel pump again and the response and power is back but now after about 24 hours the noise is back maybe even louder than before and the fuel gauge display is still fluctuating. Very frustrating. Anyone any ideas or know what might be wrong?

The help or advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

I would check inside the tank for any debris floating around . Also,is there any damage or distortion to the tank causing the pump to not pick up correctly. Have you tried running the car with the fuel cap off?

The annoying thing is i brought the car back twice once after first fuel pump replacement and he said he couldnt hear it and then second time he said he couldnt hear it but replaced it anyway...but the noise is pretty loud after some driving around...Yeah I've searched around for solutions and 3 things keep coming back

1.bad fuel pump which I've had 2 now so it's not that.

2. Fuel pressure regulator problem

3. Dirt in the fuel tank which you said aswell

I'm gonna bring it back again and get him to keep it until he hears it and can diagnose it properly.

I haven't tried running it with fuel cap off no, what am I checking for doing that?

Woukd replacing the fuel filter do anything?

Anyone who changes a fuel pump due to damage : MUST replace the filter clean the fuel lines and check and empty the tank. Debris in the lines will likely kill the replacement.

Anyone who does not replace the fuel filter when doing it is a Grade 1 muppet and should never be trusted again.

Thank you!!.. Took so long to reply because the master cylinder went on the clutch and had to get that fixed..What do you think i should do? should i bring it back down and ask him to fix the issue? but all he keeps saying is if he cant hear it he cant diagnose it which is very frustrating because i can hear it almost all of the time..Or is there something i can do myself? I can replace the fuel filter myself and put fuel injector cleaner in would that help or do i need to have the tank cleaned if there is any debris or dirt inside? Appreciate the advice
