Re HJ agony column this week a contributor advises standing the cars tyres on carpet to help prevent the tyres flat spotting over time. What could be the science in this as surely gravity will do its thing regardless of even the best Axminster!

I don't think a carpet would make much difference. What might help (apart from the obvious jacking it onto blocks or moving it around occasionally) is pumping the tyres up to the maximum allowed pressure, usually around 45-50psi, which would help to minimize the distortion.

All tyres flat spot; develop a lack of roundness when parked for long periods. HGVs suffer it over night in cold weather and the ride can be very lumpy until the heat of driving rounds the m off.

For a car parked for long periods this can damage the tyres and sir leaks from them as well.

So over-pressure them to minimise the flat area and also means they are not sat on their rims after two months.

The carpet will spread the load a little bit, but overpressuring the tyre is best I think
