Hi all

Last night i had a shock when i came home my partner had got me a suprise Valentines gift a GSD puppy i was overjoyed but also angry he did this without me.

We have said that we would get a dog one day as i cant have kids as i suffered cervical cancer 3yrs ago and i was left unable to have kids but i never feel sad about that as im thankful everyday that i still am alive and beat it. 2yrs ago we went to crufts and did a lot of research of which breed was for us so the decision of breed was not rushed we have been doing our research for the past two years on the breed and have spent a lot of time around them.

Im angry as i have a dog behaviour and traning qualification and i know better than anyone how important picking the right breeder is so im just a little annoyed he has just picked a breeder who had pups avalible. But in the end im overjoyed i have finally got a GSD. And hes amazing i cant wait for him to get older and go on long walks abd take him on holiday to devon , scotland, lake district ect. Iv been doing a lot of the work and showing my partner how to hold him correctly as he kept holding him wrong and trapping the pups leg by accident so partners learning a lot as is the pup , i think it helps i know what im doing not only due to my qualification but i was brought up around dogs ( Rottweilers and bernese mountain dogs) and my mom was a dog trainer. Partner is also reading the right dog training books and behaviour books now.

Pup is unamed at the min as we cant agree on a name. Hes a long coat black and tan GSD puppy.

Anyone else on here a dog owner?

What a lovely surprise, and a GSD puppy is lovely.

We have three hounds, a female Hungarian Vizsla, long been spayed, we got her at 14 months old, she'd had a hard time and been bullied, been with us probably 8 or more years now and getting a little grey, but she's in fine health but never lost her nervous disposition.

About 5 years ago we thought we'd get the Viz a companion and SWMBO spotted this delightful little 6 month old red cocker spaniel female on pre loved, she'd been rehomed twice before and she proved a right handful, but she's a delight of a dog, has the heart of a lion is completely unruly when out sniffing out stuff to chase...she should have been a sniffer dog really because she can root out anything...has the appetite of a Labrador can fall asleep at the drop of a hat and could snore for England.

We tentatively decided to mate her and SWMBO found a lady with an all black Cocker male, and sure enough they had pups, the result ....warning do not have pups and think its easy because it was a nightmare, Ruby needed a caesarian and within 4 hours was back home with us feeding and nurturing her babies and not allowed any painkiller, what a little trooper...but the pups were a delight, 6 born, one died within days and is buried under our magnolia tree the one who failed to arrive prompting the caeser, the other were 4perfect little cocker females all black all as naughty escape artists as their mother, and George, and that's when it became apparent that somewhere in Ruby's background is another strain or two of dog.

Cos George started life as a beige slug, and very soon started to get much bigger than his siblings, he developed freckles on his snout (springer spaniel) and a Mohican which sadly grew out, really long cocker/springer ears and the head of a golden retriever and he's long haired gold in colour and twice the size of his mum and larger than most male springers.

His overall mum my very own SWMBO fell in love with him upon seeing the little slug for the first time and yes he stayed with us, we were hoping to keep one of the female pups too but 4 dogs, three of which being nut case spaniels was just too much, so all the black females were homed...Mary was the last to go and one day they both came back in soaking wet, about 10 weeks old at this point, Mary the little escape artist had found a way out of our escape proof :-) garden and into next door via their fish pond and returned the same way, an escape artist extraordinaire.

One pup obviously went to live with her father who she bosses about something rotten, SWMBO has visited since and Rosie goes absolutely bonkers when she sees SWMBO and her brother, and George and her have a whale of a time rushing about.

So there was are, we have a Viz knocking on 10 who's completely clueless but very loyal and will not even take a treat off someone she does not know, a cocker hooligan female now spayed who misleadingly looks like butter wouldn't melt and everyone she meets falls in love with her, of course she makes a fuss of them too but she's really checking out if they happen to have a spare ham sandwich knocking about before resuming the rabbit hunt.

And then we have George, who will be 3 in July, he's a big galoot, and races round like his tail is on fire, but he's lovely natured like his mum, has been crying gently because SWMBO who was the very first sight when he opened his eyes (and who he's devoted to) was at the gym, and as i type this has just returned and the dogs are going bonkers now.

So yes, the house is a kennel, we (no i lie) SWMBO vacuums up enough dog hair to fill a mattress every week, and she loves her life in doggie world.

They all get fed on Millies Wolfheart dry food which we'd recommend to anyone, and they seem very happy dogs all in, as are we.

Great GSD puppy, Alsatian to some, what a brilliant surprise. My girl friend now wife had a sable tricoloured 6 month old pup when we first met. We used to walk the dog miles in the hills and countryside here in South Wales and I remember that try as we may we could not get the dog to jump over anything. Stiles and fences were a problem as she had to go under which was often not easy for a big dog. When we had our boys we had a wire-haired fox terrier dog for 14 years who was a typical feisty terrier. We next had a Black cocker spaniel b**** from age two again to 14years. When she died we waited a year and took on a 6month old male Sprocker which is a cross cocker/springer who is now 8. The dog's name is Sammy and he is a whirlwind compared to all our other dogs being more springer than cocker.

We always holiday in the UK self catering as the dogs have always come with us. We enjoy the countryside and beaches and now in our early 70's Sammy gives us an excuse to go out everyday and enjoy long walks.

A dog will give you a different focus on life, something else to focus on and get out and about

Enjoy his BIG FEET until the rest of him quickly catches up.

Heart-warming stories above - thanks! Being a loved dog - or cat for that matter - is a great life. The difference is that dogs have owners, cats have staff.

It seems that the dreaded three-letter acronym has invaded the dog world. I couldn't think what GSD stood for until Sammy (and his owner) translated for us. Great Spotted Dalmatian? Great Socking Dane? Ah - Alsatian = German shepherd. A slightly odd presumption that Alsace still belongs to Germany, as it did once.

Good luck Sarah - have a great time with what I'll still call an Alsatian!

I was adopted by a GSD when I met my now wife. She had a daft Young Alsatian called Torry who has a great nature, especially around people no matter the age. He was used to being handled and cuddled as a pup so he’s very affectionate and happy to be around kids or anything with two legs to be honest.

They are very alert and quite nervous big dogs though so I’d advise puppy training from an early age and try to get them socialised with other dogs. Ours goes baserk when he sees another dog when he’s on the lead and It’s a real problem walking him anywhere as there’s always another dog around the corner.

As a responsible dog keeper and as a parent I understand how important it is that dogs must be under control at all times so he’s never off the lead except in the garden or at a local smallholding that has a dog agility business including several fields set aside for exercising pets. No one can fully predict the actions of their dog and they should never be off the lead near children. It drives me mad when we’re down our local beach in summer with young toddler in tow as we have to constantly fend off out of control dogs or pick him up to be safe.

A German Shepard is a great choice and can be a loving and very loyal companion but they do take that bit extra effort to socialise and train properly and sadly their health tends to degrade rapidly beyond 10yrs as we’re seeing now.

Oh and say goodbye to a tidy house. The amount of hair, slobber and dust a GSD generates is astounding.

Thanks all for your kind words. It lovley to hear everyones stories. As a dog behaviorist i have a soft spot for Vizsla's i love training them there great characters.

Thank you SLO76 for your advice about training , as a dog behaviorist i know better than anyone how important training and socialising is especially now. I know a lot about German Shepherds i have spent a lot of time around very experienced people in the breed. By nature German shepherds are loyal , protective ( which can get them in trouble which is why its important to keep the protective trait in check and never let it get to the stage were they become over protective) , easy to train , intelligent , friendly , stable dogs a GSD should never be nervous. Thats why apart from traning and socialising its also important to check the breeder you buy from. Were lucky with me being a dog behaviorist that i know what im doing so he will with our\my help end up a well behaved stable dog.

Fun fact , German shepherds were called alsations here due to the war when we were at war with the germans we called them alsations and when the f***her of the breed max von stephanitz came to britian to judge them he said its good you call tjese alsations as there not german shepherds.

Hes been a real joy so far he was quite thoughout thursday and friday night he slept the whole way through the night without a peep out of him hes a little star. His housetraning is coming a long nicely not one accident as of yet inside but thats down to me watching him like a hawk and any signs of about to do his buissness like sniffing , turning ect i pick him up and run outside with him and he has always done it outside and he gets loads of praise while outside after hes finished.

I also agree SLO76 i hate it when idiots dont leash there dogs in areas they should be on a lead there have been a few occasions were i have had to get involed when i see a dog whos off leash run towards another dog on lead and prevent an attack only to have the owners of the off leash dog to tell me to mind my own f**** business once i say im a behaviourist they soon shut up as i know what im doing unlike them and they leash there dog. But the one time i was so happy im a behaviourist was last summer i was in town with my partner and there was this dog off leash staying with its owner but off leash so would go so far then turn back and run back to the owner i kept my eye on the dog as there were children in the town centre and i told him to put the dog on a lead but as usual i just had verbal abuse by the owner but i kept my eye on the dog good job i did as i saw him\her starring at a child who was crying and the mom was trying to sort the child out ( children cryimg can sound like pray to dogs when pray sqeal) and then the dog charged towards the kid i dropped my bags and ran infront of the dog and got his\her attention and tuen i grabbed the dog ( this is when in comes in handy to be a behaviourist as i know what to do in these situations and i know how to stay calm) i shouted at the same time to the mom to pick her child up and get inside. Because of my knowledge i saved a child from getting attacked. The owner was in shock and could not belive his dog would do that as hes never done that before. I know a lot of people belive that dogs are unpredictable or attack out of nowhere but that is not true dogs do NOT attack for no reason. What is true is that too many owmers dont know dog behaviour and dont know the sighns dogs give to show there not happy and when all the warning sighns are ignored then yes they will bite or even attack and once that has worked to keep away what ever makes the dog uneasy that dog will then all ways attack or bite in future first without giveing any warning sighns.

In other words the dogs that apparently attacked out of nowhere would have given warning sighns in the past tjat were ignored and had learnt that attacking works so just attacks rather then wasting time giving off warning sighns.

Enjoy your new dog Sarah. We lost our old Staffy just before Christmas. 14 years old and just worn out. SWMBO and daughter were bereft, a real loss and grief for us all. We kind of inherited him when our daughters relationship broke up, it was their dog. Being from a broken kennel she got custody! We don't intend to have another dog though. We are long retired and travel a lot, the daughter is a police officer and works odd hours so it would be unfair to try to take responsibility for an animal that needs care, attention and time. Tempting though it is when we see puppies, we have managed to stand firm. We can always borrow friendly dogs from relatives and we do for weekends at home etc. Maybe when we become too decrepit for galavanting around the UK and Europe we will revise the situation. Nothing quite like a cold winters night with the wood burner going and a lovely dog beside you with his head on your leg. Cheers Concrete

Thanks Concrete , hes a little star. My partner is a doctor and he does very long shifts so diesel will be coming to work with me as im self employed as a dog behaviorist and im currently traning to be an animal physiotherapist ( before becoming a dog behaviorist i was a physiotherapist but as much as i enjoyed it dogs were my true passion so i changed careers)

Im taking time out of work for now to focus on diesel and my studies ( the only thing i hate is the younger ones reminding me im the oldest on the course but i dont think 35 is old im sure there are people who have gone back to studying and are older than me)

Believe me Sarah, 35 is not old at all. I am twice your age and still going strong. May need a bit more time to gather steam and the odd medical treatment but you still have a long way to go, so enjoy it all. I hope your new career works well for you. As the saying goes: "there are no bad dogs, just bad dog owners".

Oh i wish there was a like button on here i loved your last sentence the most it made me smile. Only bad owners and bad breeders there as you very rightly say no bad dogs. No dog is born aggressive or evil on turned aggressive by stupid owners.

I grew up with a dog around the house, I thought it was mine, but it was my mums. I miss one around, but couldn’t bear to leave it on its own during the day, it’s just not fair. And I’m not keen on having to pick up its poop, I am glad that dog owners now have to pick it up, I do remember that treading in a pile was a common occurrence. Quite vile.

I had to look up GSD, hadn’t a clue what it meant. I lump that with DH, DD and DS, all of which drive me spare I’m afraid.

Hi Sarah,

Congrats on the new German Shepard puppy. Sounds like a lovely addition to your new little family.

I have an Irish Red Setter. She's a lovely dog and has a very calm and confident demeanor. Great family pet as she's great with kids. She needs a lot of exercise though - so long walks are an essential, and she loves to 'travel' so she needs to be taken to areas in the countryside where we know we can safely let her off the lead.

Best of luck with your new puppy.

:)

Pupdate, Diesel has a new name. He is now called Rocky as he keeps slapping any dogs he meets. He just wacks one of is paws at them. The trainer has never seen a german shepherd do this normaly she said its the boxer breed of dog who does this. So we named him Rocky.

Hes Grown a LOT its amazing how quick they grow from a small pup to a large dog. Hes now 5months old and is starting to enter teenage stage. His training is coming a long very well ( my partner said thats due to you knowing what your doing) hes a joy and i cant wait to see what he'll look like when fully grown. This is my partners first dog and he already wants another and he told me which breed he likes and i nearly chocked on my coffee when he said

great pyrenees mountain dog. I said there twice the size of rocky.

Im going to write in the car section soon as i have my Q5 now and love it. Im going to write and update on what its like so far later when i have enough time.
