Vauxhall Ampera - About servicing and it give any problems - Kelticknight

Hi all

Live in Ireland and some of these coming in second hand .very cheap compared to original price when first came out in UK.what I was told by dealer who's selling that the petrol 1.4 engine can be serviced by local mechanic but if any issues with electric generator or battery system wouldchsve to travel to northern Ireland which is about 5 hours drive which is ok if it doesn't give much problems. Vauxhall here is opel in Ireland and opel won't service Vauxhall ampera. So any Vauxhall ampera owners on this forum can please tell me if any issues with electric charging side of this car

Cheers

The reason it's "cheap" compared to original price is that it's original price was ridiculously high - twice the price of an Astra but the same space.

It's ridiculous that Opel dealers won't service a Vauxhall - the Ampera is just a rebadged Chevrolet Volt, in both cases - although it may be the Opel Ampera was never sold in Ireland.

Probably the most active forum for Ampera owners is here:

www.speakev.com/categories/general-motors-ev-forum.../

From memory the petrol engine is the same 1.4 4-cylinder that's used in millions of Corsas etc worldwide, so as you were told, that bit is easy. They have hydraulic tappets etc. so servicing is just oil&filter once a year. Coil packs are a weak spot, as are the water pumps but apart from that, they are a strong motor.

Also, don't forget that the Ampera was sold in the US as well as Europe with a very long warranty (I think the battery had 8 years / 100K miles) and they have a reputation for being reliable.

However, the problem with ANY plug-in hybrid (and I say this as an owner of one) is this: If anything goes wrong with the charging system, the high-voltage battery, the traction motor/s, or the transmission that couples the petrol and electric motors together, it will NOT, I repeat, NOT, be a cheap or easy fix.

The vast majority of dealers do not have a clue how to fix problems on hybrids because of their complexity. I have a BMW 225, and in the (rare) cases on the owners' forums when anything has gone wrong, the car will be at the main dealers for weeks while they wait for specialist advice from the factory.

Personally - and again, as the owner of a hybrid - I would not buy one myself unless it was brand-new with a full manufacturer warranty, so there would be minimum quibbling if anything went wrong. Buying any used car is risky, but buying a used hybrid that was withdrawn from sale a few years back is like playing Russian roulette with two bullets in the gun. Do you feel lucky?

Out of curiosity how many miles do you roughly cover in a year and is it mostly local or distance? It rarely makes economic sense for most drivers to spend more on a much more complex hybrid than a simple petrol hatchback and there are repercussions in the form of higher depreciation as it ages and the battery pack degrades (cripplingly expensive to replace) and higher servicing costs. I know pensioners who f***ed £30kupwards on a new Toyota Prius yet barely do 5k a year.

Joe Blogs backstreet dealers have no clue what to do with stuff like this so unless there’s a suitable dealer or specialist nearby I’d go and find a much simpler petrol engined hatchback instead.

^^ agreed.

If the thing dies on you and needs to be transported to be looked at, that 5 hour journey will cost serious money, more than obliterating any savings you might make on fuel.

Sorry for very late reply.was mad busy.

Since I was last here there were none for sale in Ireland and bringing in from uk was 50/50 option.

I drive around trip per day of 30 miles back and forth to work which is 90 per cent of my driving.

I'm also looking at Outlander phev too. I be buying hybrid towards end of this year. Still like the ampera as its suits me but second option is Outlander. I found a local garage who are trained to work with hybrid cars so that wont be a problem.

Wont be doing full ev for at least 5 years as teck has to improve first

Cheers

I've owned a 2012 Ampera Earth since 2014. Charles Hurst Vauxhall in Belfast have serviced it four times. In January, their accredited mechanic quit his job... and it turns out that he was the last man in Ireland trained by Vauxhall to work on this vehicle. The closest certified garage to me is in Glasgow. The car warranty is up in 7k miles, and the battery warranty is up in 7 months. I will be bringing my yoke to Enniscorthy in County Wexford (at least once) to have it serviced by Ryansautomotive.ie. Currently trying to get hold of a schedule for what is prescribed on each yearly service...
