For years now, and with great care, i keep another car battery connected up to the car having the battery changed, i find an old pair of gloves ideal for this by enclosing the connected wires inside said gloves whilst the battery is swapped over so no danger of a short.

I've tried to do this ever since seeing the serious problems that flat batteries would cause on Rover Sterlings on the rental fleets i used to serve in my previous work.
