'Yellow Jackets' in France are taking direct action against Speed Cameras

www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/gilets-jau...l

Would we condone such actions in the UK I wonder ?

Round my way, some locals take to setting speed cameras on fire.

It's already been done! (15 years ago in fact.) www.theguardian.com/uk/2003/sep/07/transport.ukcri...e Public response was "mixed" at the time as I recall...

Rule by the mob isn't really in our blood. I can't say I care for it, despite the current government and opposition.

No, but I thought everyone liked our government and its decisions, when it can make its mind up that is lol

To see one put over on the powers who regard motorists as a cash cow is unusual but quietly satisfying. I suspect no one could argue with cameras used to monitor universally acknowledge black spots, but we all know that is not the case. It brings the enforcement tactics and the law into disrepute. However we all know the rules and I suppose we would rather work within them than see chaos descend. Fixed cameras first; then what??

It may be an urban myth but here goes. I worked in the Scottish Borders for some time in the mid 90's. I travelled the Coldstream road, A689 or something. It is a decent road and in a quick car it fun to drive, but there are quite a few fixed cameras of the Gatso type. In those days they were loaded with film on a regular basis. The locals, most of whom enjoyed a spot of rallying would see the cameras being loaded. Then they would drive at them at speed from the opposite direction, slightly veer across the white line into view and the camera would flash and take a picture of nothing. This was great sport apparently and they kept doing it until the police got fed up and stopped loading film into the cameras. I was flashed a couple of times when first travelling the road and never received an NIP. There could be some truth in it. I think the modern digital cameras have put paid to that tactic though. Pity. greta fun at the time.

For car-dependent country-dwellers in France, the 80 km/hour limit symbolises the “arrogance” of a Parisian president who is indifferent to their plight. The roadside boxes have been burnt, painted over, blown up, smashed or simply covered with the jackets. The state has refused to give figures but officials have privately confirmed estimates from motoring organisations that 65 per cent of them were out of action, with about 300 destroyed. In the western Vendée department, 90 per cent have been sabotaged.

Where demonstrations are taking place, and the police or gendarmes are safeguarding the speed cameras from vandals, the demonstrators arrange to stand in front of the cameras in shifts, rendering them useless - there is no law that prevents them doing this!

Notice, it's not in the news the way the French government are now dealing with the yellow jacket protesters, they have rushed through a new law that says all protests must be pre-registered and approved by the authorities (which of course they won't approve) so any more than a handful of people grouped together are being arrested on the spot as unauthorised protesters - sounds like fascism to me. Even 3 or 4 people wearing yellow jackets having their breakfast in cafes are being rounded up and taken away!

As usual, genuine establishment uses of the jackboot are being suppressed by the media - unless the story is anything to do with people with anti-establishment views - then they can't thrown words like N**I and fascist around fast enough.

The registering of demonstrations, parades etc is not a new thing in France - even a motorcycle club ride-out over a certain number of riders, I forget how many, has to be registered with the local mayor's office.

I am still driving about with a yellow jacket stuck on the dashboard to show my support - I haven't been arrested yet!- Out of about 20 cars in the Aldi car park last saturday, more than half of them had a yellow jacket on display.

God help those working on building sites who, en-masse, go to lunch at the same time. They could all be arrested for 'demonstrating' when their 'crime' is just going to lunch still wearing their hi-vis jacket.

No-one can support vandalism to public property ... but the change in speed limits coupled with more pro-active enforcement is worthy of challenge in a legal way. These changes were stupid and excessive, the existing limits needed to be properly enforced before starting reducing them.

I understand from reports that some motorway toll stations have been damaged too .. shame no-one can find a legal way to copy to Dartford Crossing, especially as it seems that only UK registered vehicles bother paying this charge.

My yellow jacket is in the driver's door pocket ... ready for deployment at any time!
