Hi

I've need to change my pug 308 HDI simply due to general maintenance becoming ever more frequent due to age and mileage

I've never had a problem with the car or any of my previous HDI engined Peugeot's so was thinking about getting a 2 year old 308 with the 120 diesel or the now obsolete 2 litre diesel 2016 on avensis although seems to be impossible to get an avensis in decent condition as all ex hire etc

I commute all motorway 75 miles a day and every three months roughly take the car to Europe to top up the wine and beers :)

Now you've heard this a million times- petrol or diesel especially given fact that France is looking to ban diesel altogether and given that I'm in France half a dozen times a year this is worrying.

I don't want the Peugeot puretech as although an excellent engine it's got a wet belt and I'm not convinced by this idea.

I've looked at Toyota auris 1.2t which get good reviews however whats this engine like compared to the HDI for fuel economy ( mine is always excellent) and can it cope with lugging a car around Europe full of luggage, wine and beer . Again my 308 although not fast, is excellent in this regard

Thanks for reading

I get to drive plenty of these, both in 1.2 and hybrid forms. The 1.2 turbo engine is highly underrated, its surprisingly rapid, and tbh, the mpg (50 mpg+) I have got out of them, was actually quite a bit better than the 1.8 hybrid, which I also use on the exact same journey (80 miles or so).

Your usage suits a DPF equipped diesel but the disparity between diesel and petrol at the pumps and your regular trips to (now diesel hating) France suggest going petrol. The PSA 1.6 HDi diesels are nowhere near as robust as the older 2.0’s so I’d avoid them and the 1.2 3cyl is still a bit untested with few heavy mileage examples to prove themselves.

The post facelift Toyota Avensis uses a BMW diesel which has a reputation for timing chain problems among other things so I wouldn’t buy expecting Toyota reliability, even the taxi drivers up here have swapped to Auris hybrid estates instead.

I’d personally be looking at a Mazda 3 2.0 Skyactiv or an Auris 1.2T.

FYI, Toyota are recalling vehicles fitted with the BMW engine to rectify any possible timing chain issues.

As long as you don't want an automatic, I'd add the Skoda Fabia estate to your list. Not much longer than the hatch, and the 1.2 petrol engine is as eonomical as most diesels (go for the .higher-powered version).

Possibly the Fabia hatch might be big enough for you, depending on the amount of booze you're going to carry!

Hi and thanks for the replies.

Thats given me a few ideas.

Regards BMW diesels in the auris I've but heard about any issues yet but think I'll avoid diesel anyway as France looks serious about banning altogether in major towns
