rotating wheels with pressure sensors - retgwte

Just contemplating doing this, any special pressure reset needed afterwards?

rotating wheels with pressure sensors - oldroverboy.

Should do it automatically either immediately or after a few wheel rotations when moving.

Funnily enough, Glad I had TPMS as showed a slow puncture.. (repeated warnings after checking gave me the hint!) went to tyre fitters.. in my case turned out to be a badly repaired previous fix.

Found this, (MGZS 2018) after service dept explained. (note to self, read handbook fully)

Tyre Pressure Monitoring

In this interface, press OK key on the right hand steering

wheel switch or long press the trip computer button on the

indicator/main beam switch to display the tyre pressure of

each individual wheel. Use the left/right buttons on the

steering wheel switch or short press the trip computer

button to cycle through the wheels.

It would help if you said make and model!

Many cars cope fine. A few need to be told where the wheels are.

Don't need to do anything on my 2017 Hyundai i30 - change the wheels to winter or summer tyres and within a few hundred metres it has registered them correctly.

Presumably the same system used by Kia - interesting to see the affect of current winter temperatures after leaving a relatively-warm garage overnight

As a confirmed non-user, does TPMS try to monitor absolute tyre pressures, or just warn of a steady drop in pressure? If the former, how does it allow for intentional over or under-inflation ?

If its a fancy valve based system it is possible for it to give a warning showing which tyre is deflating after a very small air loss. Our Note had a valve based system and gave us a warning but not which tyre. After checking with the gauge the NSF was down 3 psi and had a screw in it

With ABS based systems its always been a simple warning of low pressure with no clue as to which tyre. Simple check with a gauge to find the culprit. Seems to be triggered after a 30% pressure loss.

On all our cars with the ABS system its been a simple reset using either a button or the info centre after changing wheels/tyres or the pressure in them (before a holiday trip) The Note was an exception, no user reset. But over inflation for a long trip never caused an issue, only potential issue would be the simple fact that if they were over inflated by 4 psi the warning would not activate until a 7 psi drop had occurred. In reality not an issue.

IMHO these systems should not replace regular checking of the tyres. But in reality how many owners bother these days.

afaik it depends upon the particular system - both exist. At least in my Avensis (which is of the type that alerts you to a significant drop in pressure from calibrated value rather than displaying individual pressures) you can set/reset the calibrated value yourself.

Won’t it depend upon which type of TPMS? As I understand it, if the car has standard rubber tyre valves, then TPMS monitors wheel rotation speed and thus wheels can be moved around, but if it has metal ‘bolt-in’ valves then there is a transmitter on the valve. This would be the instance where some form of reset would be called for, whether it be via dashboard or dealer.

Yes and no - some systems using bolt-in sensors have a single receiver for the car so need recoding after wheel rotation but others use a receiver in each wheel arch and don't need any recoding - recent VW Touareg, Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne have the latter
