British owned carmakers - down to nine? - Bilboman

Pub quiz/trivia question: How many British-owned carmakers are left? I make it nine: Ariel, Briggs, Caterham, Ginetta, McLaren, Morgan, Noble, Bristol and TVR (although the latter two aren't making any cars right now). Any I've missed? (I've discounted AC, as the company is registered in St. Kitts - no idea who owns it! - and only makes cars in South Africa and Germany.)

Whoops, I missed Aston Martin. James Bond would not be impressed! Let's see where ownership ends up after the flotation.

The country of residence of the majority shareholder is irrelevant in today’s global economy. All I care about is that they build them here and employ Brits either directly or via buying from our large component industry which supplies car manufacturers across the globe. I’ve tried to buy UK built cars as much as possible over the years, Nissan Primera, Toyota Avensis (2), Honda Jazz, Honda Civic, Honda Accord, Honda CRV and Peugeot 306 among others built elsewhere. All good cars that never let me down.

Remember also that there’s huge sums of money invested by UK shareholders in foreign car manufacturers like VAG, BMW, Mercedes etc etc etc. The UK is one of the world’s biggest investors in overseas markets. These firms today are globally owned.

In the days when British Leyland built vehicles in Australia, South Africa, Belgium and various other countries, those activities were seen as 'overseas operations' of the British motor industry.

Now the tables are turned and all the major car production facilities in Britain are just overseas operations of foreign manufacturers.

Caterham

Caterham Cars are made in Britain but the company is owned by Tony Fernades and Kamarudin Meradun, both Malaysian nationals.
