All hail the new Jimny! - badbusdriver

I am a big fan of Suzuki's diminutive workhorse, though sadly i have never been in a position where one would fit in our lives. But maybe some day soon, with the youngest offspring now being 17, we might find ourselves in circumstances where it could!. So in early 2019, some 21 years after the current Jimny was launched (itself just a heavily revised SJ413 Samuri), the new one will be with us. Thankfully the basics are the same, a very small, but very capable and tough 4x4, complete with seperate chassis and proper low ratio transfer box. Here is a link to an article from Car magazine online for those interested.

Seems to have some LJ80 styling cues around the front, i like it, a lot!

Not big or refined enough for me, but I like the shape. There is an old version near me in dark green with mud terrains on steels, it looks fantastic.

I like the exterior styling of the new one, rather like a small Jeep. Interior (mainly the dash) looks a little 'rugged', but I suppose it ain't gonna be marketed as a luxury car.

HJ does have a small amount of info on the car here:

HJ's info conflict's with what Car are saying. HJ say's engines available will be 1.0 turbo or 1.2 n/a, whereas Car say's 1.5 n/a petrol only. 5 speed manual or 4 speed(!) torque converter auto are on offer, though the auto is only available with the top spec SZ5 trim.

Still early days I suppose - maybe the has been/will be changes to its specs, given it won't be out for a year, maybe more.

Absolutely delighted to see it staying so close to its roots. Great wee cars for the job intended even if they’re not exactly refined or relaxing to drive. Though I remember the single worst car I’ve ever driven (and I’ve driven plenty) is still the SJ410. Thing felt like it was ready to topple on every corner and the noise above 40mph was biblical - not that you wanted to go that fast in it.

I refused to sell it to a lady who wanted it as a present for her 17yr old daughter, I tried in vain to talk her into a much safer driving supermini instead but she was determined. I passed her onto another salesman who did sign her up. 3 weeks later she was back wanting out of it and did a deal elsewhere at a fraction of the price she paid for it. Not every salesman will sell just anything to you, I wanted to get the right car for the job and a very unstable SJ or even later Jimny are not in my mind suitable cars for novice drivers who could find a small misjudged manoeuvre could have them off the road. This customer ended up bad mouthing our firm everywhere and we lost a potential repeat sale, thus the reason why it’s important to correctly advise and even sometimes refuse to allow someone to make a mistake.

Love it...and love the simplicity of it...no frills or overblown bling.

A bit like a small version of the Merc G-wagen.

If I was looking for that type of vehicle then it would go on my consideration list for sure.

I think it looks fantastic and very like a small G wagen. Suspect that it will sell by the bucket load.

I do think that this is something that the new Land rover defender should be like, but from what I've read they are going for a very upmarket (£40K up) high tech replacement.

I doubt very much that they would be able to build in the reliability of the Jimny either.

I suspect you'll be able to buy two or even three Jimnys for the price of one G-Wagon, and it'll last longer...

You could buy a fleet of Jimnys! G wagon is close to £150,000.

Cnn you fit 4 beehives (complete with bees ) in one?

My key criteria :-)

Not sure how big a beehive is, but according to the Car article, with the rear seats folded you can fit a washing machine in there.

To be honest, given what I've seen of them, I thought they were just a poshed-up Toyota 4x4 in the £50k odd range. But £150k for that (IMHO) piece of junk?! And it isn't even bullet-proof!

I like it. Nicely updated, still understated and resisted the urge of bling and pointless gimmicks

Proper RWD too

Poor NCAP result - just three stars www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/suzuki-jimny%E...s

I've never given the NCAP score of any vehicle I've bought a moment's thought

Usually the biggest safety factor that concerns me is the drivers of other cars

All hail the new Jimny! - KB.

Others here might not worry about the NCAP results. So be it. I just happen to think it's distinctly regrettable that, on a new car, fresh from the designers drawing board, there's a big brown section on the driver's chest, indicating "weak" protection when you look at the NCAP results. For me there are too many inclusions of the words "WEAK" and MARGINAL in the report.

Included in the "comments" under the Youtube video of the NCAP test is one entry from a bright individual who says - "who the hell is gonna crash it like that anyways be a good driver and be wary of other bad drivers, and nothing will happen to you ". [sic] Clearly written by someone who hasn't seen, close up, instances when drivers DO "crash it like that". It rather looks to me as though we're telling ourselvesthat we're far too good to be making errors of judgement or driving badly ourselves and never make a mistake that might allow such a thing to happen ... but surely we all know that even if we WERE so perfect it could, just conceivably, be someone else who drives round a bend at speed, comes across the white line and hits us head on or corner to corner - in which case it makes good sense (to me at least) for the manufacturer of a brand new design of car to make it capable of achieving more than three stars.

I don’t pay too much attention to NCAP these days, it’s too reliant on electronic gadgetry such as self braking systems to get a good score. Cars that aren’t lacking in crash safety are marked down for not having these despite being perfectly robust and strong in an impact. It unfairly marks down cheaper cars and doesn’t factor in the high likelihood of problems with these systems later in life.

We’re Already having problems with them on the buses at my work and often they cause accidents by triggering the brakes when they’re not wanted and cars then run into the back of you fortunately it’s usually while doing low speed tight manoeuvres that get you close to other objects. They’ll be a nightmare for engineering later in life when sensors and electrical connectors start to fail and degrade.

The lack of a 4 or 4 star NCAP rating may be taken as a good excuse for insurers to jack up their premiums for that car, especially for drivers under 25. A 3 star car nowadays is easily as good as the 4 star (if not better) my 12yo Mazda has. But I bet that the less honest insurers only look at the raw number.

I too try and makes sure whatever car I buy has the minimum electronic gizmos needed so that they less likely to fail (expensively, especially if doing so results in an MOT fail).

To me, the most important safety aspect in a car is its driver. IMHO too many people are getting complacent and driving more carelessly and even recklessly these days, because they think the three-lettered safety acronymn devices will save them whatever they stupidly do.

Nice one for the heads up badbusdriver. Love a 4x4, had a Freelander in the past and used to love taking it off road in North Wales.

All things being equal, I’ll be working on the dealer launch event where we’ll be introducing Jimny to the Suzuki dealer network. That’s late November, so I’ll let you know initial impressions.
All hail the new Jimny! - Sulphur Man

I've read that Suzuki are not expecting a significant uplift in sales share compared to the old model. They may have to revise that projection if it's on-road drive improves compared to the old. Reading a few reviews, it seems to be much better. I think they're going to sell a lot.

Much as i love it, i'm not sure i'd agree with that Sulphur Man. I think the Jimny will continue to be very much a niche product. 1, it is a very small car with either 4 seats and a tiny boot, or 2 seats and a decent sized boot, so no use as a family car. 2, it is quite expensive, so it is not really going to appeal to the SUV driver on a budget, even if they can manage with a car that small. In the Car article they state a price of £18k. Now even if that is for the top of the range version, as it appears there will only be 2 trim levels, i'm not sure if the lower one would be that much cheaper. Compare that price to the basic 1.6 petrol Dacia Duster (circa £10k), with much more space and practicality not to mention (probably), a more comfortable ride. OK, a Jimny would destroy it over really challenging terrain, but how many actually need that ability enough to justify buying the Jimny over the Duster?. 3, yes, it may well drive better than the current one, but, a, that wouldn't take much(!), and, b, it is still going to be something of a shock to the system for folk used to a 'normal' car.

I think it is quite possible for them to sell more than the current Jimny, but i don't think it will ever be a 'big' seller, as it is too compromised.

All hail the new Jimny! - Avant

I'd agree, BBD. I think theat most people wanting a smal Suzuki will go for the Ignis, which can be had as a 4x4 and will no doubt be a better all-rounder unless you go off-road regularly.
