70 mph speed cameras - Benet

Just over two weeks ago I was driving along the southern part of the M25 during the evening and saw a distinct speed camera flash in my mirrors while travelling at well over 80mph. I have never heard of speed cameras on gantries being set to enforce the 70mph limit; I assumed they were for lower limits due to traffic or roadworks. Fortunately the two week period has gone by and I have not received the letter warning of impending prosecution. Has anyone been prosecuted after being caught going above 70 by a gantry camera?

I'm not sure if the cameras you observed behave like the ones on the M1 which monitor the variable speed limit around Junctions 8 - 12, but these frequently flash, whatever the speed limit and whatever the speed of the traffic, as you can see if you're travelling in the opposite direction. In other words, it's not only vehicles breaking the limit that result in a flash.

And I don't see why the cameras on gantries should not work when the national speed limit is in operation.

You were doing "well over 80 mph" - is that as on your speedo? Could have been over 90, if so. If you don't get a letter I suggest you treat it as a warning.

Duly warned! We were on our way back from a trip to Europe which included a lot of time on the Autobahns where speed cameras are never a worry

As long as the NIP arrives within 14 days to the registered keeper's address then it's valid. If the NIP takes another 14 days to reach the driver then it will still be valid.

... and don't forget that Nick "Mr Loophole" Freeman gets 99% of his clients off those bothersome speeding charges for a mere £10,000 per day.

You may have been extremely lucky. Cameras on motorways especially now on the new smart motorways around j16-19 and from j14-16 soon will flash and catch people doing over 70. They will also enforce variable speed limits and flash at people not enforcing the limit

Motorway speed cameras in our area can be activated at any time for operational purposes. I have seen them flash when 70 limit is in force.

Where speed camera signs are present the cameras may be on gantries above each lane, or on the side of a gantry - these are painted yellow and are advanced enough to cover all 4 lanes - thankfully I have no experience whether they flash or not! From press reports when they were introduced I recall comments about enforcing the 70 mph limit, presumably 10%+2 is the threshold, anyone who knows for sure could update with clear fact.

looking out and spotting the cameras does present entertainment for road users ... a welcome distraction from the tedium of long journeys!

There have been a few news stories of people being flashed at 80 or 85 mph.

Most of the cameras on the "Smart" bits of the M25 operate whatever the prevailing speed limit. Certainly those around the Clacket Lane section enforce the National Speed Limit. Enforcement begins at (Limit +10% +2mph), so 79mph in a 70mph limit.

Yes, that's just where I was. Next time I see those camera symbols lit up I will have to throttle back. Even at night when there's no-one else around. Another little pleasure of motoring removed.

Ah, I didn't know laws didn't apply if its dark and there's nobody around.

Yes, that is the general idea...
