Now I 'm guessing that some here wouldn't take up this offer even if they paid you, but it may be of interest to others.

I have no connection with the company.

I'd consider it and take an informed view on any work they said was needed.

No...I wouldn't use it..there's nowt "free" in this life.

The offer is obviously short term (fair enough) and you do have to make a purchase of some kind.

More importantly, my vehicles will never see the inside of a Halfords or Kwikfit et al depot...irrelevant of any offer.

Many years ago, I went to a branch of (what was then) Nationwide Autocentre for a discounted MoT. Never again. They recouped the discount with a headlamp alignment charge and then stung me with the rusty front brake discs trick. Although slightly suspicious, I was soft and I let them do it. I was upset afterwards when I read internet postings of this being common practice, and even more so because the poor quality parts they fitted meant that the brakes were never as good afterwards.

That was at least a decade ago and I know that the ownership has been different for years, but I won't be going back to see whether the practices have changed. Not even for a free MoT.

I would not trust them to change a bulb yet alone verify if my vehicle was safe. Just my opinion, only use them for free parking for some of the stores that are near a town centre.

Looks an interesting offer.

Don't have any work carried out there, though. If your vehicle fails, get a second opinion elsewhere. Hopefully there will be a few VOSA vehicles put through on this scheme just as a check that what's being done is all kosher.

It says you just have to buy something in Halfords to qualify, carrier bags excepted. That's OK, then; I'll just buy a nut and bolt!

I'll be popping over to Halfords shortly to buy the cheapest item. 50p drillbits are available, can anyone beat this? Perhaps a single washer?

Well, looking online, the cheapest thing I can find to buy in Halfords is this:

www.halfords.com/motoring/bulbs-blades-batteries/c...1

Mind you, that's a special offer, anyway, so there's no telling how long that product will be available for that price.

Of course, going along to one of their stores you may-well find something even cheaper!

I don't think they necessarily have to fail cars to make the offer work. They will however have customers on the premises who will take their advice to replace tyres as they are advisories, have the air con cleaned or recharged, book a service etc.

I bought a 2 year old Fiesta from my local Ford dealer which came with free MOTs for life. Just about to go for MOT number 4 and nothing has needed doing yet. So yes, you can get something for nothing.

Not for nothing. It is included in the price of the car however if that was the right price for the car itself then you got a good extra thrown in. The dealer wants to keep a good relationship with you in case you need another car at some point so it is in his best interest to have you coming in regularly.

to be fair, there was a mot centre in South Wales,
which actually did "free" mots.
if the car failed, there was no charge for the mot test
and you were free to do the work yourself, or take it elsewhere.
They only charged , les than the going rate, when it passed.

(This was 15 years ago...at one of these..
