If you Sorn a car but leave it parked on the road how do you get caught? What happens

You get caught if somebody sees it and reports you. You would then face a fixed penalty or a visit to court. You willl also be charged back tax. You would also probably face a fine for not insuring it under the "continuous insurance" legislation. All in all, hardly worth the bother.

An ANPR car may also drive past and scan the reg plate.

Now that there is no tax disc, it's not so obvious an offence.

But a clean, black, Ford was recently left on a small local car park. It's lack of legality was noted, with the usual windscreen sticker. I checked it on line and it was untaxed and did not have an mot. 6 months ood at least.

DVLA have contractors out with ANPR looking for untaxed vehicles - SORN or not. Police also use sorn to check for insurance.

Offender's vehicles are lifted and flat backed to store. Passed a small convoy of DVLA contractor branded flatbeds on trip down to Cornwall a fornight ago - each was carrying one or two cars.

You might get away with it on a quiet residential road but even then hawk eyed neighbours report it.

DVLA contractors even reach those roads as well about once a month, that I have seen, several taken away last week and not old either, so its not worth the risk, they get you wherever you are!

Our old house was on a very quiet cul-de-sac with about 40 properties. One week 4 cars were lifted by the DVLA (or whoever) for offences. They were a Merc (never seen again), a decorators Transit (back in a few days), a Saab (never seen again) and a rusty knackered Escort Mk5 that had been sat on the owners drive for years (together with a 1980's Nova), it had only been on the road for a few days whilst he had builders in. Car was back on his drive a couple of weeks later where it was still sitting rusting away (the Nova is still there) the last time we were visiting old neighbours earlier this year. Obviously thinks they are valuable classics.

I wouldn't be surprised if your address is flagged for a "drive by" when you declare SORN.

Putting aside my suspicion as to why such a question would be asked in the first place, I'd be inclined to agree with Gibbo that declaring SORN would put you on a DVLA watch list.
