Volvo V40 - Looking for a new hatchback under £8k - Ashley Line

Hello,

Looking for some advice,

We are looking to purchase a used hatchback, around the £7 - 8k mark,

So far we seem to like the Volvo V40,

However there are options like the Golf, the Kia Ceed etc,

What hatchback do you recommend at this price range?

Looking for something economical and practical,

Thank you

Simple answer, Seat Leon. For your budget you should be able to get a 2014 1.4 TSi 140 PS example. Brilliant performance and excellent economy, ours averaged a true 45 mpg. Take into consideration the cam belt interval is 120,000 miles or 5 years so a 2014 example would be due next year, budget £400 at a dealer icluding waterpump and tensioner.

What sort of usage will it see, mostly local stop start or mostly distance? Diesels aren’t suitable unless you do regular longer distance driving. The Volvo is a nice car but at your budget they’re mostly 1.6 PSA diesels which have a rather nasty reputation for turbo failure. The Leon 1.4 TSi is a great option as long as it’s the current model which uses the much more reliable belt driven engine. It’s basically a cheaper Golf. Alternatives depend on your useage but the Leon is both economical and reliable.

I've had a few Volvos and they just go on and on, to be fair I haven't had a V40 but the current V70 d just eats up miles, swallows luggage and is quite economical.

A Civic 1.8 would be a good contender. The Auris 1.2T seems quite highly regarded as well, but I'm not sure if you'd find one in budget.

I have owned several Volvos, including a V40, and whilst they are fantastic cars they are not the biggest in any respect. The cabin is 'snug' whilst rear seat and headroom isn't brilliant. Couple that with a tiny boot (unless you fold the seats) and I found it a real struggle space wise.

I have never owned a Leon but they seem to be well regarded but I'd add my vote to the Honda Civic that someone else has mentioned if you can find a nice one. They are surprisingly roomy, if not to everyone's taste aesthetically, plus you are buying one of the most reliable brands on the road.

Good luck.
