A quick google says it's chain drive, so won't need changing for the foreseeable future. Google is your friend ;-)

clutch issues

The 1.7 diesel is chain driven and with regular oil changes using the correct grade there should never be a need to change the chain. Clutches are a bit weak on them so check the biting point and feel for juddering from cold. Buy one with a full main dealer history and you’ll get the remainder of that excellent 5yr unlimited mileage warranty again if you are willing to continue servicing it at the dealer. Biggest issue on these is depreciation so buy knowing that it’ll be next to worthless when you are done with it.

Whats a good bet to beat depreciation, keep it for 2-3 years 40-50k over that period.

Had 2 Premium Tourers. Bullet proof reliability, excellent build quality, a decent dealership network as well.

1st one I bought nearly new (2011 my) and proceeded to put 50k miles on in 2.5 years. It had a couple of minor recall issues but they were done with minimum fuss. This was a 1.7crdi 136hp manual and regularly returned 50mpg as my mileage was mainly motorway.

2nd was a new 65 plated revised model but to be honest apart from the new front end and a slightly revised sat nav/dab/climate unit, was essentially the same car. Although they did improve the steering, gear box and clutch. In 2.5. years it was nigh on perfect, a minor door lock issue was the only problem and was fixed while I waited.

Badge snobbery kills the brand. The build quality and attention to detail is pretty good. I have just switched to a Passat and it is only marginally better in terms of build quality and materials. Only time will tell if it is as reliable as both i40’s. The only reason I switched is I don’t do a mileage anymore to justify a diesel.

You will not be disappointed.
