Is there any reason why Automatic Toyota Celicas are available in the US and Japan but not in Europe? Does anyone know if Toyota are likely to launch one over here?

Toyota would say a history of limited demand for small automatics in Europe (small meaning anything with an engine size of less than 2 litres). Any real demand from punters for sports transmissions is limited to sequential manuals (like the MR2) and more ratios (celica has 6).
I really can't see that the Celica would make a good automatic as they need a bit a lot of revs to make them move with the 1.8 engine. I know the US auto is a four speed and the performance is often considered "leisurely" compared to the manual - It certainly couldn't be described as sporty, just a fashion accessory.
