Shall I add legal cover when renewing my insurance - FoxyJukebox

Lots of good on line advice on the pros and cons of adding to policies-but FEW if no examples available of where drivers have found this useful or not. Can anyone here add an example of just where--for them--legal cover proved invaluable or a waste. That would be helpful -thanks

When you buy legal cover as part of your insurance, if you have a claim the legal people are actually working for your insurnace Company, not you, and will procede with the cheapest option for their client, which is not you. And yes I have experience of this when many years ago I took such an add-on with my main insurance.

I'll add to Palcouk's reply and suggest that legal cover would almost invariably be cheaper if bought independantly as a stand alone policy.

I don't bother with it at all.

I don't bother with it at all.

Neither do I. If I need to claim or sue, if the third party or their insurance company won't pay, I go through the local small claims court, or use my solicitor. Only had to do it once or twice in over 30yrs.

What BT said.

If, and it's a fairly big if, you decide you need the cover then that obtained independently is probably cheaper and certainly better.

As an add on it's just a profit line for the seller. Same as gap insurance on new cars and breakdown insurance on household appliances.

If you buy legal cover through your insurer - they will work for the insurer.

If you buy legal cover through your insurer - you cannot use them to tke action against the insurer for any shortcomings in their work - for example claiming for unsatisfactory repairs to your car BY the insurer's preferred bodyshop.

Buy a standalone policy if you want one - 1/2 price or so

I had a claim years back - lawyer's bill was £1800 which the 3rd party insurer paid - car damage was 1/2 the lawyer's bill!

Many breakdown recovery companies either include it or offer it as an option.

Given the dubious nature of these add-on policies, anyone got one of these free policies? www.freemotorlegal.co.uk

And more importantly, used it? Or is it another strand to the same con?

I obtain my GAP and legal cover insurance seperately. far cheaper and you can virtually tailor the polciy to suit you. As for examples: when I had a 'fight' with a Royal mail truck it came in handy. RM at the time were self insuring and they were absolute bast@@ds to deal with. A real nightmare, even my solicitor was getting exasperated until we finally got them to court. Then they gave in a few days before. So, two lessons here: legal cover allowed me to delagate the problem to a solicitor but also you still need the iron rsolve to resist these virmin like companies or people, whose only defence is to string you along until you get tired or fed up and give up. So if you are not prepared to stay the course, don't bother with the cover. The usual fobbing off remains, but someone can do it for you!

You pays your money....... Cheers Concrete
