Hi, Im looking to buy a Mondeo around the 12/13 model, diesel ideally will be the auto but possibly manual. it will be the 2.0 tdci version.

What things should I watch out for whilst viewing, mileage wise will be around 55/60k.

Any advice will be helpful

Thanks

The first thing that springs to mind is the PowerShift gearbox, which, like a fair few dual clutch gearboxes, doesn't have a great reliability record and is expensive to fix due to its complexity. Go for a manual gearbox if you can. DPF, cambelt and suspension issues may also rear their heads.

Do you have a specific car in mind? What will you be using it for? How long do you intend to keep it?

I will primarly using it for commuting 20k a year, and keeping for 2-3 years. is there any reliable autos for this sort of size avoiding prestige brands.

Given the mileage and period you plan to keep the car, I'd wonder if a diesel is the best choice? You may get better use out of a Toyota Avensis 1.8 CVT for instance. It'll be cheaper to buy up front and naturally-aspirated Japanese petrol engines are as simple and reliable as you can get.

The engines are robust and Ford's DPF system on the Mondeos is one of the best, it doesn't seem to give much trouble compared with other mainstream marques.

Cambelt interval is long on these engines - 125,000 miles or 10 years.

Check the spec carefully. My son had one of that age with lots of bells and whistles like speed sign reading but oddly no parking aids. Its a very big car.

You may not be interested in these specically but there may be some things that you expect that iaren't actually standard but is part of some "pack".

I was surprised as my earler Mondeo ghia had a very full spec.

A great used buy but I’d avoid the 1.6 diesels and the Powershift gearbox. A 2.0 TDCi manual which is properly maintained is fit for big six figure mileages with ease. DMF is pretty common at 70-100k but some last well beyond, much depends on the driver and the volume of stop start driving you do.

Areliable auto is actually hard to find on mass market cars like this. Ford and VAG’s automated manual boxes are a heap of trouble as they age and are best avoided. Vauxhall do use a conventional auto but the Fiat designed diesel motors are prone numerous issues as they put on the miles and years.

Toyota CVT autos are reliable but it doesn’t work well with a diesel which means a petrol hybrid which doesn’t work well at higher speeds. They’re great around town though and well liked by taxi drivers. The Auris is a worthy option if you do a high annual mileage, most of it likely calmly.

The size below opens up a few other options such as the Toyota Auris 1.6/1.2T CVT, Honda Civic 1.8 auto and the Mazda 3 2.0 Skyactiv auto. All of which will match a 2.0 diesel auto Mondeo day to day on fuel plus have no real reliability worries.

The Avensis is available as a 2.2 diesel with conventional auto, but I don't know how reliable the later D-CAT engines are, the earlier ones were prone to head gasket failure.

I have an 08 2.0 tdci edge estate manual. It's now on 200,000 mikes. I've had it since 100,000. It's been very reliable. A serpentine belt tensioner, new rear brake caliper have been the only repairs needed. They are a big car but handle well. My dpf did get blocked when my commute went down from 37 mile motorway to 10 mile cross country but I did a static regen with the excellent forscan obd software.

They are an excellent motorway car

I think it's on original dpf and battery. I haven't changed either.

Not many torque converter diesel autos to choose from in this sector, I'd seriously consider a 2012ish Peugeot 508 GT, pretty much the same engine as the Mondeo but mated to a proper 6 speed torque converter auto. Supremely comfy motorway cruisers, lots of kit, very punchy (200bhp) and very, very good value. Obviously there’s a SW (Estate) variant too.

For Mondeo money (ie 2-3K more) you may even be able to pick up a later diesel hybrid.

508 gt do look good but they are a lot more expensive then coming model 508 or similar mondeos. Quick look on autotrader for a 2013 pug gt with 60 K miles cheapest is £8k ( only one) rest are 10k plus. Mondeo are around £6.5k as are 2.0d 508. There is also a lot more choice.

GT looks nice but that is quite a premium.
