Yup one failed glow plug, Exact same thing on my old 1.9d pug 405. If you get more than one go starting becomes harder.

Sorry to butt in but could RF take a look at my 405 alarm question? Any comments would be welcome.
Thanks.
Steve.

Thanks for the prompt reply. i wont be able to check until next week, but your diagnosis sounds promising. i take it i have to remove the metal strap that connects the glow plugs before i take ohms readings, and can find any duff plug without removing first (really difficult to get to)

Yes you have to remove the strap first or you will be measuring all the plugs, expect a reading of around 1 ohm or less for a working plug. If the engine layout is the same as my 1.9 405 TD then to remove the strap you'll need a 8mm spanner and for the plugs a 12mm ring/combi spanner, the one on the behind the injector pump can only be done using a deep offset ring spanner on my Pug, a magnetic pickup is really helpful here. If you need to replace any plugs make sure you use Beru or Bosch. Other brands can fail within weeks. For Beru plugs you could try German, French and Swedish -

Managed to get a set of Beru glow plugs and have now fitted them.
Problem is cured. Thanks to all concerned.
