Took the dog with us in the car to Belgium, stayed outside Bruges for 5 nights. VERY dog friendly place..

When giving priority to cyclists, got a friendly thank you wave all the time. Other drivers manners at roundabouts excellent, no "shoving in".... As a pedestrian car drivers excellent at crossings and otherwise, and a strange absence of car horns going off at the slightest provocation...

Then back to the race track of the M2 from dover (M25 not too bad) and then suicide alley, otherwise known as the A12....

Good to be home.....

When driving in France on main roads and motorways, I've noticed Belgian cars seems to be very pushy - very keen to "make progress". But, as in other continental countries, Belgians and others move over to the nearside promptly after overtaking - none of this middle-lane-hogging nonsense.

Probably because most of the autoroutes/autovias are two-lane. Certainly never have problems in Spain, and whilst there are still a few nutters, the introduction of fixed and mobile cameras have had an impact, thankfully

Wow, very different experience of Belgian drivers than most I suspect. I've driven there a few times and found them very aggressive and just rubbish. Taxi drivers in Brussels worse than in Istanbul. Still good to know they're dog friendly!

I used to drive in Belgium regularly - the only city I struggled with was Antwerp. This was before I had a car with satnav. There are (were) loads of signs pointing to the centre, but very few pointing out to the major routes. Each time I'd end up going round and round (on cobbled streets) looking for the right way to continue my journey.

I spent an afternoon in Brussels a few years back and saw the aftermath of three accidents in that time. A local colleague told me this was not unusual.

Interesting set of divergent responses - just shows how easy it can be to experience an unfamiliar area and attribute any quirks to a national characteristic :-)

Driving behaviour in the UK varies a good deal across the country, so I suspect it may well do so in Belgium, tho that country is much smaller. My only experience of driving there meant crossing it as quickly as possible, to get to the other side. The strongest memory is the sequence of frites outlets along the main roads.

Belgium used to have a reputation for terrible driving standards mainly because driving tests weren't introduced there until 1977. So maybe nowadays Belgians over-compensate for their history by being good drivers. Although that's not really over compensating.

is it illegai to use cruise crontrol in Belgium?

M2 between Medway services and Faversham is shocking, urgently needs a 3rd lane, and as for the junction to exit to A2 (roundabout) ... most mornings I witness a queue over a mile long back to J7, sometimes beyond!

I've found the sign posting in Belgium is a rather mysterious. You have two names for everything either in French or Flemish and they don't admit to anything that's over the border. For example don't don't expect any signposting to Lille even if you actually in the suburbs. And they assume that once you have to Antwerp that is the end of the discworld, they don't admit that the Netherlands are round the corner ....

I’ve met plenty of Flemish speakers who speak English, but not Walloon. Mmmmmm.

Drivers down here in a East Hants are pretty good, I rarely see aggression. Even the M3 is fine, though I stick to the ‘slow lane’. You get the odd turnip. Today someone used lane one, the outside lane, to circumnavigate a large two lane roundabout, which could have caused a crash. And sometimes I get stuck behind a slow driver on windy B roads. But overall standards are good, and the root vegetables tolerable.

I could rant on about cyclists, who pop out of nowhere in sunny weather, and create tailbacks by cycling down busy B roads at peak time, where you can’t overtake, even though they all have cars, but just want to cycle cos they’re selfish little lentil munching self satisfied ... [At this point the writer was carried away, the foam wiped from the corners of his mouth, and sedated for his own wellbeing.]

Please don’t rant on about cyclists, it’s just small minded and tiresome. As for your observations, just grow up. Last comment in brackets sadly likely to be all too true....

Screw you.

Thread closed. There are few things more boring and unproductive than driver / cyclist arguments. The original topic, although interesting, has run its course anyway.
