Add Mercedes to the list for bad customer service. They are interested only in replacing whole units...not repairing them. Intransigent and not bothered by customers opinions, bet they aren't the worst lo either.. I may make this car my last Merc due to their attitude. Last CLK had a roof problem, Mercedes wanted to replace the lot for mega bucks...just as they do my present SLK roof...local indie 'tweaked a sensor' for an economical fix.

Perhaps being a premium marque they are used to dealing with wealthy people who accept the expert advice they provide?

That's one possiblity, my last and hopefully The last visit to the MB glass palace was to get a part for the seat belt presenter (there's posh for you :-) on my old MB coupe, the 'expert' wanted over £200 for the whole mechanism, but this old fool had his glasses on and was watching the screen and noticed the part i needed, the triangle the belt slips through that retracts into the B pillar, had its own part number, don't think he was that pleased i pointed this out, my revised bill £16.

If it hadn't been for my venerable MB indy we would never have kept any of them, he's saved me £thousands over the years because apart from the NA Diesel none of them have been particularly reliable or durable, and my honest opinion after having 4 x W124 MB's, supposedly the last of the real Mercs, is if i had my time again each one of those would have been a big Toyota or medium Lexus of the period, thankfully with the new Camry on the horizon i'm hoping these recent years of Toyota beating hell out of their (and Lexus) UK cars with the ugly stick might be coming to an end.

My only out of the ordinary dealings with Toyota was getting the injectors replaced on my Hilux in year 4, out of warranty, a mere formality and no question of any payment from me required, would have been covered up to 100k and 7 years anyway as known problem, even Mr T doesn't always get it right, but they always put it right, that's all i ask.

Very interesting. It does suggest that MB has more than a bit of the Veblen good about it.

Reckon expert should be in inverted commas. I think Merecedes have policies which they won't budge from and won't let their dealers either, all designed to maximise profit. I am now trying bodywork shops and indies to see if I can get a repair but all respect for Mercedes has gone out of the window.

They were implied. :)

It's a malaise with many main dealers of any marque. Wife's Corsa recently had its 3rd service (done under a service plan).

The Vx dealer tried to tell me the front pads were "95% worn" and the discs needed replacing too at a total cost of £410. They were quite affronted when I told them that I knew where the wear indicators were on the pads, and that I could see the pads were less than 50% worn.

I recall reading some time ago about the little tricks garages have for making money. I think it was written by HJ. One trick is replacing a functioning bulb at a service, a nice little earner. I had a Nissan with bulbs that were supposedly blowing all the time. Since then bulbs have lasted 5+ years! I'm pretty sure a garage did not replace the oil during a recent service, since one month later the AA/RAC found that the oil was at the lowest mark on the dipstick, and it needed a can throwing in. Shameful.

All garages make mistakes - it's typically a good way to sort the decent from the profiteers when you go back and complain. When I last had a vauxhall (more than 10 years ago), I had excellent service from my local main dealer (which I really didn't expect). They would rectify the few problems immediately and always in my favour. I now use an independent for just about everything, although my Jazz has one Honda service left (it came with the car when I bought it) I will probably ask my indie to check the brakes over first - seeing that Honda don't include this.

I really can understand John F's point of view after seeing how some cars are 'serviced'.

But when at each service they claim that a bulb has blown, that's not a mistake, that's effectively fraud. When I took the car elsewhere, the bulbs lasted longer. :)

I used an indie for my old Ka. Brilliant. He repaired the tailgate lock for a modest sum. So I used him for my VW Up. He charged more than VW for the service, and didn't even change the spark plugs unlike VW. I suspect he was charging according to perceived ability to pay.

I wonder though, back in my kerbside cowboy days i used to service cars thoroughly, none of this major minor cods wallop i'd go right through the car renewing what was needed (though obviously new oil and filter was every standard), including stripping cleaning and lubing the brakes and on those cars prone to regular CV joint problems, i'd repack the CV joints with the correct grease and they would nearly always last the life of the vehicle, most bulbs were pennies so no charge unless headlights or similar wattage, i haven't a clue what i charged when compared to a main dealer, but i had a some loyal customers who used me all the time, and the feedback they got at MOT test only confirmed things for them, but times have moved on and specialising is the new game in town.

A service these days might be an oil change, that isn't and never will be a service even if they try to charge £300+ for it, its an oil change and that's all it is.

That seems an accurate description of the service situation, went hrough what I got for £300 plus on my SLK and it's all check this ..check that with little actually done...how do you know it's been checked?

You don’t. VW do the major minor thing, And a minor is basically an oil change. However, I buy a major and a minor together which makes the price okayish, and VW are very fussy. After each service VW send a questionnaire, and I know the dealer cares a lot about VW questionnaires. I believe the results are tied in with a bonus. When ai bought my car, the salesman was very keen I gave full marks. Of course you never know if they actually do the full service, and I doubt you can ever know. I’m sure the local indie does the work properly, but it risks the VW warranty, and costs more.

Thanks - and I haven't even contributed to this thread! I have always thought MBs are overpriced moneypits, with the exception of just one well known model. They have cost all I have known who have had them a fortune in either depreciation, service costs, or both.

Nice to see on here a positive comparison of a Mk1 Focus Estate (especially roomy owing to clever rear multilink suspension) with a Merc estate. It was especially useful in our house move 7yrs ago! Dread to think what a Merc would have cost over the 14yrs we have had it, bought at 4yrs old for £7000, serviced only by myself and the MoT tester. Why pay twice for checks?
