The usual request for a recommended car.

The current petrol 4x4 is no longer fit for purpose - too big and much too thirsty.

The absolute requirments are:

softly sprung, comfortable, economical and cruise control.

Price about £5k. I like cars but don't enjoy spending money on them!

Mileage is 24 fast motorway miles (rural area so no stop-start traffic to contend with) each way for three days per week (but likely to be more than this) with shorter journeys on the two other days.

Any left-field recommendations? To diesel or not to diesel?

Details are a bit sparce here?.

Your current car is to big and thirsty, but you don't say what it is or what MPG you get, so how can we advise something smaller and more efficient?.

What is the smallest size of car you could manage with, or want?. Also, you currently have a 4x4, does it's replacement need to be a 4x4/SUV, or are you happy to get a conventional car?.

You only account for 5 out of the 7 days in a week regarding mileage, what is the annual mileage likely to be?.

Without some clarity it is difficult to make a reccomendation, but, going by what you have mentioned, there seems to be no case for diesel. At that budget you will be looking at a more modern complex diesel engine, but it will be a good age, and have had quite a few owners by now. Extra maintenence costs (unless doing it yourself) is more than likely to offset the extra fuel cost of a simpler N/A petrol.

Toyota avensis 1.8 is economical, reliable and comfortable. You could buy the estate version if you need lots of room.

AT that price range, for what you want you wont go far wrong with the Toyota Avensis. I have had three and never spent apenny or repairs, just normal servicing.

Or a Prius, or an Auris hybrid. Despote the complexity, these are very reliable, and will be more economical than your 4x4, whatever make that may be.

The 4x4 is a 2.5 petrol X-trail. It probably ekes out 30 to the gallon on the motorway and is closer to 25 around town. Tax (due at the end of July) will set me back over £300. That said, it's been reliable, there have been no nasty financial shocks, it's fantastically comfortable, and it has enough oomph to pull a horse trailer. It's also very nice to drive but with great power comes great fuel bills...

I'd looked at the Prius but my goodness they hold their value! I'd not considered the Avensis so I'll add it to the list.

Thanks one and all.

On a limited budget like this I’d avoid diesel or anything else complex such as hybrid or performance models. Stick to something petrol and straightforward like a Civic 1.8 or Mazda 3 1.6. No idea what your needs are size wise but it may make more financial sense just living with what you have until anything major fails. The £300 a year road tax is small fish compared to the added depreciation of a newer motor.

Thank you. Your advice is appreciated. The X-trail's in good mechanical condition and I'm always loathe to change a car that's running well.
