I was amazed (and impressed) by a signpost that I came across in a Wiltshire village the other day.
It is one of those old villages where the road goes down to one lane to squeeze between the houses. Also there is a blind crest and a tight corner to contend with.
However as I approached this bit of road there was one of these electronic signs (which light up as you approach - usually telling you that you are going too fast) that actually warned me that there was a "Vehicle Ahead".
I slowed down and lo and behold a car whizzed round the corner.

Sounds like a very good idea to me C. Came across one of the automatic speed indicator signs a couple of weeks ago just outside Farnborough Village. It only flashes your speed if you're doing over 30mph and I think it works for 2 reasons. First, it wakes you up to the speed you're doing and, second, it shows everyone else what speed you're doing so there's an added embarrassment factor involved too. Obviously a hardened speeder probably won't be put off but even if a few people slow down as a result it's worth it.

We have had these signs that flash the speed limit if you exceed it but the problem now is everyone seems to enjoy setting the damn thing off so they end up going faster than they normally would.

Mind you then the Gary-boys come along complete with camera so they can record just how quick they were going. Has been known.

A similar set up is on a road in to Ludlow from the A49. This is to warn of vehicles at a blind junction joining the road you're tavelling on. The only way for them to join the road is to edge so far out they have to hope nobody's coming along at the same time! There has been many accidents. Now it works really well - technology actually working to save lives.

How long will it be before the sign fails and some local, used seeing the sign zooms round the corner and hits something head on. and sues the council....
I have to grow old - but I don't have to grow up

I'd have thought that unlikely unless they were able to prove the Council were negligent by, for example, failing to repair a sign that they'd had reasonable notice wasn't working properly. Even then it'd be an interesting case.
