Hey,

Have just had a service at local dealer and been told I need new brake pads and disks, replacement rear bump stops and rear coil springs need replacing. Also differential seals and injector seals need replacing. MOT is due by the end of the month but I've been quoted approx £1200 to get it to a point where it will pass. There's an issue with excessive travel on the handbrake too which I think is linked to an emergency rear brake replacement at Kwikfit over xmas last year.

It's an 08 plate with 112,000 miles on the clock but currently feels fine to drive although I realise that not all problems show.... is this a fair quote? It's not worth fixing at this price so need to make a quick decision and would appreciate some advice.

Thanks in advance.

Might be worth getting an RAC inspection before you go any further, see
www.rac.co.uk/buying-a-car/vehicle-inspections

The basic one should suffice. I have a feeling the garage is ripping you off, but a proper unbiased inspection would confirm either way.

Yeah I get the feeling you're being ripped off.

I do a bit... thing is, I'm not going to pay that, it's almost as much as the car is worth! So they're not really making anything from me, but I don't know if it's more economical to get the work done and risk further problems down the line, or to sell it.

It's too easy to compare a garage quote with 'what the car is worth' - but what matters is the cost of replacing this car with another which you aren't as familiar with. Not as easy to estimate, but probably more. If you like the present car and it can be easily fixed (properly), that may well be the way to go.

I've never heard of a car needing its bump stops replacing either.

Is that a Citroen main dealer? Main dealers make a lot of money from exaggerating work that is required, pads and discs being a favourite, and why do the springs need replacing, are they broken?

Would suggest trying an independent garage, where are you? If we know where you are some good Indi’s may be recommended.

It is almost embarassing to watch a video of your car in the main dealers and the fitter(technician) giving a running commentry of what he thinks your car needs! Get your car MOT'ed at a good independant garage and go from there

I don't know about differential seals, but all the other parts are cheap to buy and simple to replace that shouldn't take up too much time for a professional mechanic.

It would be interesting to see a breakdown of the costs, and whether the bulk of that is the £100+VAT labour most dealers charge.
