Noticed website has had an update/refresh while the forum is still from the dark ages. How long will this continue? Perhaps I'm alone in thinking this way?

Just my own opinion, but the forum format is fine, works for me and doesn't need tinkering with.

I agree. It is irritating that when things are modernised 'improved' there are often problems.

The forum still has issues with updated threads and posts not being listed as 'new', especially on the General Discussion section. Even now, one of the newest items (Seat Leon issue) is new to me (the thread is classed as 'new' to me), and yet only the last two posts are classed as 'new', despite me never reading tht thread before.

Something for the IT boffins to get their head around...

Have you let them know?

I did when it happened the last time when it happened across several of the boards. They seemed to partially fix it. Avant did, I think, pass on my concerns about this issue as well a while ago as well.

I keep well away from IT issues. Kalpesh (kalpesh@honestjohn.co.uk) is invariably helpful, but you'd need to explain to him what you mean by 'the dark ages', as I have no idea.

I don't regard trying to make out faint gold lettering against a navy blue background as an "improvement". It was always drummed into me that an appropriate contrast was required so that visual aids could easily be read. This is an example of how not to do it.

I don't see where this is on the HJ website I look at.

Thanks for this focussed.

What I get is not what I see on Windows XP + IE - (I wonder why?) but I see what I get on Windows 10 + Chrome!

I agree, this forums format is as old as the dinosaurs.

It deffo needs a better layout. I mean if you hit reply to the wrong person, your new post could be between two very old posts and not at the end as it should be.

You can post stuff, people can reply to what you post, (or ignore it) and generally speaking it appears in some sort of rough chronological order. This grand old forum manages just fine without avatars, signatures and all the other superficial flannel that other groups allow. So what if some of the new wording is harder to read? Get a magnifying glass or sit in the dark.

Sorry, but with great respect some folks clearly have too much time on their hands.

Completely agree Argy, the forum is absolutely fine as it is.

If it ain't broke.......etc, etc!

I haven't noticed any changes and I don't see the need for any.

What am I missing?

I think some people previously asked for things like up and down votes, but to be honest, all that seems to encourage is:

  • People sucking up to others if they can get benefits on the site from doing so (some give 'premium' levels of access for free for the 'most popular/prolific posters' - not an issue here as its not a pay site or has different levels of membership [like a newspaper site]), and/or;
  • People deliberately down-voting people they disagree with, often for frivolous or personal reasons, artificially creating animosity between site members and encouraging trolling and flaming.

I'd rather stick with what we've got, perhaps with a few tweaks here and there, such as:

  1. A 'Go to top' button for threads;
  2. A 'preview' facility before posting;
  3. Having longer threads limited to (say) 25 posts on a page and splitting them up into multiple pages (does that save on computer memory use, especially when viewing the site on a phone or tablet?);
  4. Being able to view all your own posts via your membership page to more easily find one rather than via the general search facility.

Just some thoughts of mine.
