I get the impression they have simpy put a plaster on an open wound, no hard decisions made.

That is the old Daewoo factories and the Daewoo product was never very good. I don't think the stuff that they produce under the GM brand is much better.

They have to keep the factory open as they've just closed all those in Australia manufacturing (the same) under the GM ' Holden' brand. Sales over there were tanking anyway, seemingly (as I read it) because of poor product quality and the poor customer ratings (and resulting government intervention).

GM will be lucky to survive outside continental US.

Not even as good as the Vauxhall/Opels - John Cadogan has nothing good to say about he cars, the mediocre dealers, the steep depreciation.

Vx Antara & Viva came/come from there & neither were much good.

They look like they get the Astra and Insignia (called the 'Commodore' Down Under), though I doubt if they're European-built now - probably from the GM factories in the Far East.

Indeed he is scathing about them (where I got my info) - they had to be put in some kind of 'special measures' for customer care by the Australian government after many tales of woe post purchase of their cars. What I find amazing to this day is how easy customer care SHOULD be, and how much damage just a few instances of bad customer care can do to a firm's reputation, let alone a lot.

Some makes (and some in certain parts of the world) can do it, so why can they all? Its one of the big criticisms I have of Mazda (being a Mazda car owner for 12 years) - there are so many bad reviews of Mazda dealerships in the UK, yet, from what I've seen of John Cadogan's reports, nearly the opposite in Australia, barring the serious problems with the 'ute' they sell which is the same as the one of Ford's (I suspect they are being 'leaned on' by Ford, even now that they are independent of them).

Unless GM get their act together worldwide, they could go under. I wouldn't loose much sleep over this, but I would if I worked for them or for a component supplier/sub-contractor. They don't seem able to halt their decline into oblivion.

I worked for US companies in the 1970s/80s. Some were very international in outlook, made allowances for local conditions, were flexible. and ran businesses abroad which took teh best of teh US and adapted it.

GM at one time were teh world's biggest car maker : 1950s to 1980s. Big cars, cheaply built, relaible but simple. They came late to disk brakes and basically opposed change as it cost money. The Japanese slaughtered them when they arrived - quality, specification and running costs. GM continued as was , convinced tehy knew best.

They failed uttrely in Europe ever to consistently make money and basically were late to diesles when they were essential, and ruined some good models through retrograde replacements - The repalcement of the highly lauded cars with patently inferior models being a sign of poor management.

Their engineering was patently inferior : unsurprising due to their US history of KISS.

They will not be missed.

Agreed on all counts, Madf, and I can't forgive GM for what it did to SAAB.

It’s the component quality that is my biggest issue; already you can see a huge difference in component standards and quality between the PSA Vauxhall vehicles such as the Grandland and the GM Vauxhall junk like the corsa and viva.

The faster PSA replace all the GM models the better

It still puzzles me to this day why PSA purchased GM Europe, engineering wise they have nothing going for them, had next to nothing new or revolutionary in the pipeline, the current engine range was average at best while they still used 1970 designed gear boxes in some vehicles.
