Peugeot 307 SW - Aircon regas - horsepills

I should start by saying I'm not technical/mechanical at all!

I have an old (but well maintained) 2004 Peugeot 307. I use the aircon all the time to cool in summer and demist, etc... in cooler months. I've noticed recently that it's no longer producing cold air.

Options are limited where I live, so I called Kwik Fit and they quoted £60 and said they'd need the car for an hour. I took it to Halfords and they quoted £30 + £10 to do it for me & said it would take around 20 mins - does anyone know why there's such a difference in price and time? I.e. Would they both do the same job? Only difference I noticed was that kwik fit mentioned using a machine rather then a gas canister

To do the job properly requires a machine that runs through a set process to recover ,vacuum and then recharge gas with some lubricant.Using an aerosol can does none of these.

If your aircon's not working, the most likely cause is loss of gas. This could be due to natural cause, such as leaking out through seals, but nowadays is more often because of condenser (radiator) stone damage.

A respectable place would place a dye in the new gas that can be detected by (UV?) light in the case of a leak.

Do not rule out a simple electrical fault, preventing the aircon working, or the compressor clutch, or...................................................................

My current 4-year-old car has aircon that's below comparison with its 11-year-old replacement. I had the old one re-gassed at nine years and the report showed it had lost around 10% of its gas. I've had the current car for four years and I've never been impressed by the aircon efficiency. I won't put it in for an aircon service until it fails to meet my requirements. As it still cools, i doubt the problem's a gas leak, but more likely its effectiveness, or a lack of gas at new.

I'd also rule out either of the options the OP's suggested, but go to a an aircon specialist.

I'd echo bathtub's last point. After a botched £50 job by a local garage, a mobile aircon specialist charged only a little over £70 for a far more thorough and effective service.

ISTR that HJ has pointed out several times that at a certain point EU regs mandated use of a different refrigerant gas which has proved far more troublesome...
