Most aftermarket warranties offer poor value. They’re either hugely overpriced or offer very limited cover. The only decent warranties are manufacturer new or approved used policies. What type and age of car are you thinking of covering and what mileage has it done?

SLO is right and over long term you are unlikely to claim back what you have paid in premiums anyway. Same as domestic appliance warranties.

On the advice of an article on here I took out a warranty from Motoreasy on my Volvo convertible. I bought it new in 2009 and had only done about 17,000 miles in it. I took the policy out on the phone. In this hot summer, the hazard lights kept coming on when parked outside my house. I contacted Motor Easy and they told me I was only covered if the vehicle actually broke down a mile from home. I did tell them this was not the case and I would not have taken the policy out as my car would not break down. I took the policy out just in case there was a problem with the electric roof. They did tell me to take it to Halfords and I had to pay a fee. Halfords found nothing the matter with the vehicle which did not surprise me as it was a Volvo after all. I then contacted Moor Easy and had to take it to Volvo garage in Bury St Edmunds and again they found nothing wrong and I had to pay a fee. I was not impressed so I left a bad review on Trustpilot. I was contacted by Motor Easy to actually change my review to something positive and they would reimburse me the two fees. This I did to get my money back but seemed completely wrong! In the end the car went back to Marshalls in Cambridge from where I bought it and it turned out to be a faulty switch. It was now that I tried to get my premium back and they told me about the breakdown away from home etc. I told them I wanted them to listen to my phone call. this went on for some weeks and they kept stalling and I never heard from hem again. Well until the renewal is due this October by automatic direct debit. Well, I did not want that and cancelled and made them write me a letter to say they would not take the money from me. I don't trust them. and I paid them for nothing...I would still like my money back. I feel I have been cheated.

Most people who 'extend a warranty' do not expect to get any money back, as they hope nothing will happen to their car. The T&C's on most warranties can usually be interpreted to exclude minor problems such as yours - and many major ones too. Their main purpose is to give peace of mind. The companies know most 'cheated' owners won't bother to litigate unless they are seriously out of pocket.

I'm a bit old fashioned when it comes to Warranties. In my opinion If you seek to rely on one to be able to afford to run a particular car.

Don't buy that car.

It's clear you won't be able to afford it buy something cheaper instead.

I think as a rule they are a complete waste of money.

That's a skewed view. When you buy a car, do you decline any warranty that comes with it on the basis you can afford the repairs? Of course not.

Brought 2nd hand car on h.p

From dealer who is 2.5 hours away.

At the time of purchase was told 3 months warranty and if issues and faults arise

I will be able to use local dealer. Now have couple of faults they want me to drive

All the way back to the garage. Having children and full time job I dont have the time.

Does anyone have any idea about consumer rights etc or laws that will help me..because they lied to me when I purchased the car. How can the expect people to come back from far a field.

"How can the expect people to come back from far a field.

Because that's how it works.

I don't quite see how 'consumer rights' can help here, as you chose to buy from a distant garage, who are willing to repair your car. If you have something in writing about using a local dealer, that may give you some leverage, or (just possibly) your local dealer might come to some arrangement with them.

As ever.
