Rover 623 1994 - ECU "learning" - Poor Iris

The cambelt snapped leaving 4 inlet valves bent,my local garage replaced all the neccessary parts and engine runs ok however the idle speed has gone bonkers, running at 1800rpm then dropping to 500rpm sometimes stalling. My garage tells me that the ECU has to re learn and my idle should return to normal in a few days.Is this correct? for a car of this age to have "learning ability" Many thanks,

If it did have a re-learn facility,(which I don't think it has),the system should settle down within 15-20 miles.More likely that something has not been put back correctly.Possibly an air or vacuum pipe (loads on this engine) or an electrical part not connected.
