First, make sure your 'normal' driving type is correct for a modern diesel. With the 1.4 petrols getting 45+mpg (a couple of regular contributors to the forum have them, specifically on Skodas) if you're regularly having to do 'extra' journeys to keep the DPF clean then the diesel car might work out more expensive to run.
HJ himself recommends always using 'premium' diesel - he likes Shell V Power. I use it myself 90+% of the time, and don't get any problems with my diesel BMW EGR valve, whereas I know plenty of people who run 'normal' diesel who have had problems. Only you can decide if the extra cost is worth it though.
