Does spam really matter so much? - Avant

To those who send Emails reporting spam - thank you for being helpful although there's no need to bother as I look at the forum each day and have a mechanism for getting rid of it so that the same spammer can't come back. It only takes a couple of clicks - less time than reading the Emails. I moderate on my own but it doesn't take much of my time.

Obviously new spammers can come in - they are clearly a sub-species who have no awareness that the spam will achieve nothing. But I can't see that it's anything for anybody to get worked up about. Just ignore it.

To the benighted soul who Emailed saying that the forum needs moderators - Genesis, chapter 9 verse 1.

In some ways these half wits can be reassuring as we age and realise we're getting weaker dafter more forgetful various aches and pains etc, we can take some solace from thinking well there but for the grace of God go us, we could be a blithering idiot like this latest spammer who must have spent untold wasted time posting multiples only for Avant to simply click it, and chuck the poster and his garbage straight in the skip where he and it belongs.

edit, another idiot's started, something in the water or the result of an experiment by some Frankenstein type?

I like it - it's naughty, but I like it.

Indeed. Very good.

Avant: IIRC when I reported some spam some months back you were rude to me, along the lines of "Don't be so annoying and waste my time reporting spam.". The problem here is that at the bottom of each post is a report button. I suspect most people seeing spam would be inclined to report it. There is no clear indication that people should not report spam.

Can I suggest that you add a sticky about spam, and that when people click on the report post button, and the editor appears, that it contains a warning to please not report spam. That way your time won't be wasted, and you won't end up having a wobbley. :)

Yeah, but won't their children turn out to be idiots too?

I would refer the spammer to the reply given a writ against Private Eye.

In the case Pressdram v Arkle a two word reply was given.

It began and ended with the same letter, which was 'F'

The OP's post sits above 6 spam messages that haven't yet been removed so i feel the report button is well worth pushing now and again.

Avant doesn't remove them, he blocks the poster from doing it again. I think?

If so, that's why people (including myself) report it, as often the threads aren't deleted for more than a day. Quite ironic that after the original post here was posted, 6 or so new 'love doctor' threads popped up on the Motoring Discussion section alone...and 15 on the General section... ;-)

I think I may be right in saying that Avant does not spend his every waking hour staring at our input and waiting to leap on every slice of spam. So some of it hangs around for a while.

IQ has a degree of heritability, but generally it reverts to the mean.

It might be difficult for you to,do, but ideally you’d want to prevent users from posting until you have approved their first N posts.

The problem with that is that there is likely to be quite a few newcomers to this forum, often people who use it only for a short period who are looking for help on a problem. That's a LOT of moderating.

The key question is why does this forum attract so many spammers or perhaps why does the software not bar them?

No other forum I use has a problem at this level.

Some blogs i comment on have a policy the first post has to be approved, once approved you're in.

That might be worth considering here, so the spammer has to make one or possibly several literate (that should flumox a few) postings before being granted unmoderated posting rights.

They blame Monty Python for the use of spam to describe rubbish e-mail and posts:- www.youtube.com/watch?v=anwy2MPT5RE

Remember - you only see what is allowed to appear ... never what is rejected or banned by the system etc ... so perhaps its more a case of not knowing what you don't see rather than this site has a greater attraction than others ...

Thanks for the heads up message, I too will save my time and not report in future

I have linked to this forum before

www.seat-forum.co.uk/forum/index.php

I used to go on there in 2013 when I got the Leon. By 2015 it was being drowned in spam. I reported some and was banned. Obviously I did not post enough spam.

Does spam really matter so much? - Bromptonaut

Right now it's making the site a PITA to use as there's so much visual clutter from the love doctor's latest batch of spam.

Does spam really matter so much? - gordonbennet

Indeed Bromp, it isn't helping make the site enjoyable for anyone, this one is particularly annoying, doubly so i imagine for people on smart phones where page space is an issue.

We've had several posters offer to help out to quash rubbish like this as it arrives, which IMHO would help deter prolific half wits like the current, when he sees his work of the moment vanish as fast as he can upload it, plus have to reregister each time as his account gets zapped, he'll get fed up clear off and look for easier pickings.

Its just a shame that they can't ban people with certain IP addresses (including areas if there are such things) rather than usernames, which can more easily be changed.

Perhaps also the system could limit new users to a maximum number of posts per week/month and also the number of threads they can start, until they 'prove themselves' by at least not posting spam.

I think also any spam related emails they may (have to) send to people who spam to say (and why) their account has been closed should go from a different email address than, sa, moderators@.... or suchlike - one that is for outgoing mail only so that any 'replies' can be automatically deleted so not to clog up their IT systems.

I hate spam in a forum the same way I hate seeing graffiti. Here it's liike seeing a friend's house has been broken into and paint sprayed all over the walls. Then when you suggest the door needs better locks, they say it doesn't really matter.

Does spam really matter so much? - Avant

Thank you for all the constructive suggestions. If you are concerned, do by all means Email kalpesh@honestjohn.co.uk if you think something can be done to modify the software. I don't control that, thank goodness, but Kalpesh is always very helpful.

To any rational way of thinking, spam on a forum is not in the same league as burgling a house.
