No surprise there.!...My wife is on her third consecutive Yaris...can't fault them...and they just keep going with the minimum of fuss and expense.

Not sure why that should be hadline news my Vauxhall Corsa and Nissan Micras were around the same age and also flwe through MOTs and only needed basic servicing.

I remember the presenters on the motor show Driven gushing over it at the time it came out. It's incredibly spacious for it's size, easy and fun to drive. The money was spent wisely on the engineering, it's hardly got any weak points.

A great choice if your budget is low and you need something dependable and economical to run.

Agreed, not a surprise - but good to have it posted here as a strong suggestion to the many people who come here seeking advice on a cheap car as to where their money should go.

Used car purchases carry some risk, increasing in proportion to how old and cheap the car is. But if the car is a Toyota, it really does seem that that risk is smaller.

Also, in my experience, provided that you go for the larger engine where there's a choice (as in in the 1.3 Yaris), Toyotas aren't nearly as dull to drive as the magazines make out. The smaller engine will of course do fine if all you need is to get reliably from A to B.

The mk1 Yaris has become the car of chocie for local takeaway drivers, replacing the K11 Micra.

They need reliability, but don't spend much on them!

They did have one problem that could rear its head, rear wheel bearings are integral in the hub, and were a scandalous price from the main dealer, and being Toyotas don't fall apart the second they are out of warranty like some makes the aftermarket industry can be quite slow in making such part available.

When a probably 6 or 7 year old yaris my mate had a rear bearing failure, the OE part being some £225 IIRC, luckily the very first pattern part maker came up trumps and he obtained one for about half that, last time i looked they were about £40.

I was surprised when Toyota allowed PSA to share the Aygo platform and mechanics, giving PSA the first really reliable small car since the 106/saxo was discontinued, i wonder if they came to regret that.

If we didn't need the extra space for the dogs, i have no doubt a 1.8SR Yaris mk 2 would be sitting on our drive now.

We have owned our 2003 Yaris D4D since 2005. Still going strong: runs like a two year old car. Original exhaust. Occasional repairs of which a new rear spring for £35 was the most expensive..

Gone through a lot of front anti roll drop link bushes though due to potholes and speed humps (and my driving but don't tell my wife whose car it is)

Yes, I sometimes think that 'certain parts' of the motoring media feel that any review of any Toyota must contain some knowing remark about it being dull. I'm no signed-up petrolhead and no doubt there are other cars that can be cornered harder, but my 1.2T Auris is (for my money) pretty entertaining as well as comfortable and practical. Must confess to taking too much enjoyment when, having being tailgated by some oik while observing the limit through one of our local villages, I can leave it behind without fuss on the curving open roads.

Quite so. Scanning through Top Gear Magazine in my dentist's waiting room this morning was a far worse experience than that provided by my dentist drilling my tooth to replace a failed filling. I sort of think TG Magazine is not in touch with the motoring world as I know it.

As for the Yaris - agreed that it is a very good car. My friend has owned a 2004 D4D from new which apart an appetite for droplinks has been utterly reliable. I think he has a glow plug issue at the moment in that the EML is illuminated with the garage being reluctant to remove the plugs due to them being seized in tight. Car still runs fine despite this. My friend is a high earner yet sticks with the Yaris because he likes it so much!

Chose a MK 1 auto for my sons fiancée and she has been delighted with it.
What delighted me when we first found it was the words Made in Japan on the vin plate.
So no local content whatsoever.
Same goes for the early Corollas which were imported before production started at Burnaston.
