Driving along the A45 just outside of Coventry today when an unmarked BMW 320 estate flashed up with a message “do not overtake” blue and red square lights started to flash. All the traffic slowed and followed this car for 3 miles. The Beemer then pulled off and displayed “thank you” in the rear screen, random!

Unmarked police car putting on a rolling road block for some reason?

No accident ahead, no breakdowns, nothing in the road ahead

Whatever was in road was removed while you were being held back?

why not get the local press to investigate ...Police must have justifiable reason for such action, local press best placed to find out

That reminds me of travelling from London to Scotland overnight on one of the motorways. At about 2am, as I approached a junction, I saw a police car, with flashing blue lights, coming up a slip road on the left. I got to the junction first and the car merged behind me, then seemed to slow down. In no time I was way out in front on my own. It went on like that for several miles until I saw a Highways Agency, or similar, lorry loaded with traffic cones, coming towards me on the hard shoulder. After a few more miles, everything went back to normal and I was again in a light, but steady flow of traffic.

Similar happened to me once, only I didn't see the car heading the rolling road block. I was aware of it behind me and spent the next couple of miles wondering if I'd overtaken it illegally. There was debris in the road ahead and I presume the block was to give some empty road while it was picked up.

Unmarked car. May have been told there were people or animals on the carriageway, nothing found after three miles so search stopped. Incident ahead which was cleared. May have simply been a training session.

A tweet to the relevant force may get a response.

Really? The police do something and you think the local press should invetigate to find out if it was justifiable? Waste of time for all involved.

Agree...there would be a reason for that and I'm mystified as to why any "investigation" would be thought necessary.

It could indeed be training. Emergency services carry out blue light response training on normal roads, in normal traffic, so you can understand why they might want to practice the rolling road block and inconvenience hundreds of people in order to put a tick in an instructor's box.

How else could they train to do it other than actually doing it on a real road in real traffic?

Most likely something further up the road that needed a brief rolling block. Cleared a short time later. Not likely to be driving slowly for the fun of it- rolling blocks can be dangerous, especially at night.

Had a very similar thing about 2 weeks back on the A130 near Chelmsford. Plain car with red and blue lights flashing in rear window and do not over take sign in rear window driving at 30mph in centre lane. I stayed back as did the person in centre lane, Some smart alex in the outside tried to go past and the car cut infront of him. The car then started zig zagging across all lanes and got slower and more emphasised zig zagging before stopping sideways across the centre lane. The driver was alone and he got out and cleared some buckets and debris from the road, throwing it onto the grass verge at the side of the road. A quick wave to us waiting and he got back in the car and accelerated away quickly.
