Our 4month old Nissan Juke rs has cracked/bubbled paintwork on the center console. We have been fobbed off twice now by Nissan and both times have said “either a drink has spilt out of the cup holder or an air freshener has reacted with the paint. None of these are true, our air fresheners are on the air vents and we only have bottled drinks!! We personally witnessed the paint bubbling when returning to the car on a hot summers day, but now Nissan are trying to make us pay £400 for the repair of what is basically a part not fit for purpose. After booking the vehicle in twice to our dealership, we were told “ there used to be a paintwork issue on the center console but Nissan have sorted it” clearly not. The second time in escalating the claim, they said “it’s not really a common problem, we get about 4 a month in” no disrespect but I think that’s a lot for a small dealership. We are now left in limbo with nothing they can apparently do. Any help is sorting this issue out is appreciated. My next step is a letter direct to the CEO of Nissan and then according to trading standerds i should go on the forum, contact the people who have had this same issue (which is a lot of people) and create a file with all the people affected and present this to Nissan. Have you got any other ideas to get this repaired befor i go down this route? Nissan has the most appalling customer service, and im getting sick of them fobbing me off with excuses

If a centre console can't take a spilt drink or an air freshener near it causing the paint to bubble then it dosen't say much about the quality of the interior. If it's a known problem then I would complain to Nissan directly, if no joy then a small claims court action seems the way forward, take photos to support your claim.

The interior quality of a Juke is indeed pi** poor, or the original shape one was anyway. Awful hard shiny plastic everywhere, nowhere moreso than on the top of the dash where the cheap shiny hazard light switch pokes through clumsily through. Style over subtance; cheap and nasty as well as impractical. Not an excuse for the paint to fall off though!

I'm sure that I've read other threads about this on HJ before, but the search fails to find it.

But there it is on the huge list of the "What to watch out for" on the HJ review of the Juke.

3-4-2014: Paint/plastic trim of centre console of Nissan Juke prone to peeling. Nissan is now warning customers that this could happen.

After you've bought it presumably. What an attitude.

If Nissan knew about problems with the lacquer peeeling back in 2014, which points to lack of durability, and it is still happening, then that is a very irresponsible attitude.Plus a cost of £400 is crazy money, but I guess a lot of that is labour for removing the console. To have the problem after 4 months is worrying. To admit that one small dealer gets four similar complaints a month (ie 48 a year) is hadly pacifying for you, but sounds exagerated to me.

I too have Juke and also spilt coffee, chips, ketchup and other stuff on the centre console with no ill effects. So I am begining to wonder if this is a colour-specific problem as I dont think it was reported what colour consoles other had issues with. (mine is dark grey). Your suggestion of getting together other affected owners is a good one - remember the Renault Clio bonnet 'farce' that was denied by the manufacturer until it got TV exposure?

You claim that Nissan has appalling customer service. Is that at dealer level or via the UK customer help line?

When my air con pipes chaffed through last summer (poorly routed on a 65 plate car with no spacer), one dealer refused to look at them on spec when I turned up, insisting on a booked date for investigation 3 weeks hence - at which time they agreed with what I told them (and already knew) that I needed new pipes. I was kept waiting for weeks as dealer claimed parts on back order and it was me chasing them.

Eventually I go so cheese off, I complained direct to Nissan, got a call from a case handler the next day who asked various Qs including whether this was my first Nissan (it was but is a leased company car) and within 72 hours I get a call back to say dealer should be in touch as parts were located. While we were talking had text from dealer asking me to call them. Funny that.

I think you need to be very assertive with Nissan UK, as youve paid good money. You could hint that if they remain intransigent, you will put pictures of their rubbish quality control on social media. If they (and the dealer) still play hardball (as they dealer is responsible), I'd tell the dealer in writing that you are not happy, you will seek a second opinion and go talk to a local bodyshop. If they can do it, send the dealer the bill, and if necessary take him to the small claims court. Dealers think they can fob customers off - no, fight back.

common problem on the Juke

I seem to tremember that when the Juke first came out, Nissan said that the painted centre console was meant to be reminiscent of the petrol tank on a motorbike.

What they never told us was why anyone would want to be reminded of a motorbike's petrol tank while driving a Nissan.

My Juke is a 65 plate and the gear stick console has melted and cracked. Looks b***** awful but Nissan don’t want to know. I suppose I can replace it but what if it happens again. No happy

If it's a 65 plate and therefore still under original warranty, then it's quite simple : you tell the supplying dealer to fix/replace it under warranty. If they refuse, you go to Small Claims Court for the cost of getting the work done.

Or let them ride roughshod over you.

Your choice

You could throw in at the dealer for good measure whatever the paintwork guarantee is, 3 yrs?. Then when they say centre console excluded, ask to see the small print detailing the specific exclusions.

The other issue is if you do have to bite the bullet and pay, where you stand if the replacement peels?

My 17 Suzuki Ignis has a painted interior console bit. Reviewers said it was flimsy and would fall apart. Well over a year now and the paints perfect and it's completely fine. Just saying reviewers often wrong.

Ethan, That is the lazy motoring press reviewers, not actual owner reviews which is the case in terms of interior trim paintwork on the central console of the Juke.

Nissan Europe are effectively re-bagged Renaults with one or two exceptions.
If your buying a Nissan, the chances are your buying a car that is predominantly made up of Renault/Dacia parts and components.

Renault/Dacia have flimsy cheap as chips interiors and parts, do not be surprised this has spread to Nissan.

Nissan reliability and build quality has deteriorated and continues to do so, this is not merely an opinion based on prejudice but on personal experience of Nissan models and the thoughts of a good friend who is a senior technician at a Nissan/Renault/Dacia dealership.

Are they all bad? No.
But rather than Nissan pulling up Renaults quality, Renault has dragged down Nissans.

One last thing, it was either a disgruntled Enterprise or Europcar ex member of staff who wrote Nissan Juke central console damage was one of the most lucrative damage claims against customers. They also mentioned the alloys on a Vauxhall Corsa being particularly prone to damage and something to do with a Fiat 500 but I can’t recall the details of that one.
If the ‘ethical’ hire companies know the Juke central console is prone to damage and a cash cow, you really do have a quality control problem.

Personally I found the interior of my wifes 2013 Juke to be one of the worst I've had in a car in decades, everything was flimsy and creaky, things seemed to work loose and it was a pampered low mileage car.

Our centre console paint stayed intact in the three years we had it, but the armrest was loose and there was a list of rattles and creaks.

Not buying another nissan in a hurry.

Nissan should've stayed 100% Japanese. They built some very good cars back then.

If Nissan are are anything like Mercedes at customer 'care' you are going to get nowhere. We ought to have a vote on which company gives least help to their customers....my vote Mercedes.
