As mentioned in one of my previous posts, i have a Rover 214 Sei. This model comes with air con as standard (not climate control). Iv'e never had air con before. When the heat dial is set to hot, should the air con blow hot or not?

Yes, it will (should), and it's also an excellent way to demist - aircon is arguably as useful in the winter as summer.
Try to run it for at least ten minutes a week to keep the seals lubricated.
