Fitting Dellorto twin 40s to a 1.8 golf - Ros
I have recently acquired a pair of Dellorto DHLA 40mm Carbs for a bargain price and am looking to fit them on a 1991 1.8 mk2 Golf Driver (engine code - GU). Seeing as I have never attempted anything remotely like this before does anyone have any advice for me???

I know I'll need some of the obvious things like linkage, inlet manifold, possibly new throttle cable but will I have to uprate the fuel system i.e. the fuel pump or will the existing one suffice as the car is already carbed???

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance...

Unless you fit a better camshaft, port the head and make major changes to the exhaust system, there's no point-you'll just be wasting money.

The motor\'s already got a gti cam shaft, exhaust manifold and down pipe... I get what your saying but surely the biggest single restriction to air flow on the engine as it stands is the carb itself!!! Surely replacing a single barrel Pierburg with 4 barrel\'s of Dellorto is gonna have an effect???

Go to the vw Clubgti site and do a search on dellorto.

You will find on balance that it is probably not worth the effort! go and buy a proper gti!

Ring your insurance company and see ifall these goodies you have fitted to a standard 1.8 up the premium more than the benefit they give you. Regards Peter

Those carbs will over fuel your engine. If you port the head, fit a sports cam (not a gti cam), and stick the carb on tiny jets it might be ok. Better to go and buy an old Jetta/Golf 16v and stick them on that with a ported head and cam. You could stick them on as standard, but you would only get a few more bhp, say 5 (and thats on a 16v), and huge fuel consumption. I deffinately do not think it is worth it unless you seriously modify the rest of the engine.

Plus the fuel consumption would be an absolute joke! I had an Alfa Arna 1.5Ti with twin downdraft Dellortos, running a 36 choke I think - they were standard fitment - best it would do was around 20mpg!!! They'd be great on a Vauxhall XE engine though...

Thanks for the feed back guys I appreciate it.
The car is winding up to be a work in progress project type of thing so I will be carrying out most of the mods but in time... I just couldn't pass up buying the carbs. I also own a Mk3 GTI 16v which I know would be sweet fitting the carbs to (inlet on the better side of the engine block) but I like the motor as is and am not convinced about converting fuel injection to carb ie more hassle than its worth.
So I think I'll stick with tinkering on the mk2. Does anyone know if the exisiting fuel system can cope with twin carbs?

Should do-even the old Ford mechanical pump could cope with 130/140hp.
