My E-reg 1987 Passat with the 1.8 engine, pierburg 2E2 carb has developed the problem of the engine running on after the ignition is switched off. The choke unit seems to be working ok, it comes on, keeps the revs at around 1800rpm until the engine is fully warmed up and then drops off to a steady 800-900rpm at idle. A local mechanic says these carbs are very problematic and has advised to change to a weber conversion for around £300 all in. This seems a bit drastic and was wondering if anyone has suffered this problem? Any cheap remedies/advice?
Thanks T

There has been much discussion on the problems with this carburettor. I think the problem you have is that your warm idling speed is too high at 900. Spec is 750. Also the 1800 till fully warmed is also an indicator that the waxstat needs changing or that the coolant flow thro' the unit is insufficient due to a blockage either within the 'stat, the choke flap heat mass or the inlet manifold gasket. As regards replacing the carb the benefits are: manual choke, an improvement in fuel consumption and performance. The downside is the cost on an old car.If you were my customer I would repair the carb you have got.

cheers thanks for the info. I have recently had the radiator changed and since that time the choke does seem to be staying on longer than before. I also had the waxstat
changed 6 months ago because of the choke sticking permanently on.The mechanic at the time said that he was not able to alter the idle speed, his own words "its not responding to tuning".
Could you tell me where the idle control screw/valve is, so that i can try to adjust myself. Is there a possible anti-run on valve that can be cheaply replaced/checked? I dont want to waste my money on mechanics labour rates, fruitlessly not being able to improve things.
thanks for any help.T

The new waxstat may need to have the cam it pushes against reset to ensure that it is going fully 'off'. The idle speed adjuster is on the drivers side of the carb, you adjust the length of the moving plunger by a 13mm hex on the reverse side. Get her up to temp and see if this rod is in contact with the throttle arm, if not, adjust the waxstat cam (3 0r 4mm allen screw) if so try and wind in the plunger (Dont adjust the threaded rod).It is possible you may have a slight air leak under the carb due to a split rubber mount, spray some WD40 or carb cleaner round it to detect a change in note.

Sorry, meant to add, have you checked coolant level lately and no there is no anti-dieseling solenoid.

I had one of these cars until last year with 1 or 2 carb problems - it did have 210k when it was sold and I maintained it via german & swedush parts. Anyway the answer to your problems will be found in the Haynes Solex & Pierburg Carb manual wwhich can probably be viewed at your local reference library or bought from a Haynes stockist. The only issue that wasn't covered by the manual was when a blocked off vacuum connection at the base of the card perished - itwas blocked off with a rubber bung and not viewable from the top. IIRC there are 4 vacuum takeoffs but only 3 are used .
