I have a new shape Mondeo (01Y 1.8LX) with 30k on the clock. Parked up the other day with wheels on full lock and noticed that the front driver's side tyre was completely bald on the inside edge. I can't say I'd noticed this happening as I rarely see the inside edge of the tyres.
The tyres are Contisport all round and these have been on since about 12k - still plenty of tread on them all round. Got a new tyre fitted at a local dealer but I wasn't offered a tracking or alignment check (probably because it was 4PM on a Saturday) The fitter recomended getting the steering geometry checked at the next service. It was last serviced at the main dealer in January and isn't due for another 7000 miles so I rang the main dealer and they wanted £80 for a geometry check at their bodyshop. They then suggested I get the tracking checked at a tyre dealer(!)
The car has no wheel wobble at speed, sits steady on the road and I've never kerbed it. The pressure in the bald tyre was also correct. Anybody got any ideas what the problem could be? Should I get the tracking checked as a matter of course at the tyre dealer?
Any thoughts on this appreciated

Yes, get the tracking checked otherwise the new tyre could go the same way as the worn one. Also make sure if they have to adjust the tracking, they adjust it on both sides so as to keep the steering wheel central.
Personally I wouldn't go back to the place that fitted the tyre to have the tracking checked though - I would go elsewhere. If they couldn't be bothered checking the tracking on replacing a worn tyre, then why should you bother paying them for a slap dash service.

I have just experienced the same problem. I took the Mondeo (1.8 LX TDI, \"R\" reg 65k miles) to the local Ford agent for an oil & filter change and was shown that the front offside tyre was completely bald on the inside edge. I said that there was no wheel wobble and no pulling to either side when driving or braking.
The garage advised that \"as the nearside wheel is perfect and as the car was driving properly the alignment must be ok and a check would be a waste of money\". It was said that:
a) this sometimes happens in Diesels and
b) it could be a bush
Any advice gratefully received

Milton Keynes syndrome? All those lovely mini-roundabouts knock the wheel out of true?
|
funny old thing my mondeo 97p td est wore illegal the outer edge of the nearside front, the offside tyre was absolutely fine. Both tyres were replaced as a pair and had done 10000 miles michelin energy 185/65,s the outside tyre is still fitted and has loads of depth left why the inside one wore out i do not know but the tread was less than legal and the outer corner badly chamferred had the tracking checked and adjusted during service £20. Perhaps mondeos are more suspect to kerbing however slight and this may be aggrivated by the diesel engine,s extra weight

surely this won't be too big a problem with religious rotation of tyres...

Mini-roundabouts??? They're all dirty great big roundabouts in MK!
It's more likely to be those infernal speed cushions, the things that are cambered at the edges to be exactly the same width as your car. Loads of them, and also loads of full width speed ramps, in each separate area of MK.
