Hi all,
I do about 20,000 miles a year. I work for myself, IT related, and I'm looking for my next car. My '07 BMW 525d 3.0 touring has done 171k and has cost me a lot of money in the last year, with new dual mass flywheel, clutch & crankshaft pulley. It had a replacement DPF at 120k a couple of years ago. I bought it 5 yrs ago with 85k on the clock. I love the car, and it still goes like a train (300 miles yesterday) and returns about 38mpg. It is fast, comfortable, practical and drives like a dream. I'm looking for another used car, but am wary of buying a diesel which is about 5 yrs old and facing big bills, yet my mileage points to a diesel as the logical choice. I would like a big estate car which drives well, though not wedded to BMW, though it has to be said, once you're used to iDrive, and you try another car (Volvo V60, Jeep Renegade) and realise how dreadful their user interfaces are.....Anyway, what might I consider that is reasonably quick, won't do terrible MPG, is at least as big as the Beemer and feels good to drive? Is it diesel, then wait for the inevitable bills, or petrol and take the hit over time at the pumps?
The car spends 6 weeks a year abroad in Italy with my wife and family, so must be good for long-distance continental driving too.
Cheers - Philip
