Carburettor cleaning goes wrong - roscopervis
I was cleaning my carburettor with redex, my brother was keeping the revs up while I was pouring in. He then decided to just go, without my knowledge and the car stalled. Ok no problem, just try to get it restarted. Problem is it doesn't want to know as it coughs and splutters. So my battery is dead now. I then get my brother to help me bump start it and as we are doing it there is an almighty ping, that because it is so loud sounds more like an almighty bang.

Trying to start the car now, it doesn't cough but just keeps trying to turn over with, it seems, no intention of starting.

What was that banging pinging noise(which also came with loads of smoke).

Is my engine wrecked?

What can I do to fix the problem?

The car is a 1992 Nissan Primera 1.6.

First thing to do is whip out the spark plugs and give them a good clean with a wire brush, as you\'ve probably drowned them in redex.

It was probably just the car backfiring as the plugs are wet.

I hope that hasn't blown his Ecotek device...might be stuck open and letting in so much air it will never start.

I hope you haven't hydraulic locked the engine by pouring liquid straight down the air intake. Take the plugs out and make sure the engine turns over.

The best way to clean a carb is to strip it and blow it out with compressed air. Invest in a compressor in your garage, they're not that expensive as you only need a small one (50 litres will do fine for what you're going to use it for). It's amazing how many uses you'll find for it.

My Ecotek device has nothing to do with this!

However, the problem is worse, still cant start it after trying everything everybody has told me. It turns over without the plugs, when they are cleaned and in (evry attemt getts them incredibly sooted up) it tries to start but never catches, the exhaust pops too.

I think I am in some trouble here.

Tow the car to start it,this will start the car and then keep the revs up to clear it through, you may have to be quite brutal with it,but it will get the job done.

I have tried to tow start the car and it didn't work. It blew the back box apart with a huge backfire.

When you attached the HT leads back to the spark plugs did you make sure you attached them to the plugs that they came off??? The symptoms you describe seem to point to Ht leads connected to incorrect plugs........

I think Mike's trying to say that plug leads are on wrong....

I did this and sorted it by spraying carb cleaner or possibly another solvent into the carb while cranking it to dissolve any redex in the system. presuming plug leads in the right order it will start eventually
Carburettor cleaning goes wrong - roscopervis
The leads are right, they are at different lengths so that the one that reaches is the right one!

I have a mobile mechanic to look at it today to hopefully sort it out.

Thanx for the advice.

I have a bottle of redex in my cupboard someone gave me. I was thinking about giving it a go. No chance of that now! Not touching it. Or maybe I'll just dump in with petrol to get rid of it. Hmmm

PS Hope you car gets well soon

Its running again. I havent had a chance to speak to the mechanic who fixed it yet, so I dont know what he did but its running, thats the main thing. Put it in the tank by all means, just not in the carb!

Its a good thing, a day of driving my brothers phase 1 1.4 Clio Rt and I already dislike it a lot!

I did this once many years ago, in the the garage, to a Mk2 Astra - the amount of white smoke that was dumped out of the exhaust was unbelievable - the neighbours thought the house was on fire and nearly called the fire brigade ...

I was a regular user of Redex in the 1960s. Experience tells me that the best place for it is neither in the tank nor the carburettor but in the bottle it came in.

Likewise, I strongly believe that almost all add-on performance and economy gismos work best when left in the box. There may be exceptions but I can't think of any.

Seeing your cooments on the MPG thread reminded me. I watched this thread with some, errrrr, "interest" and waited with baited breath for the concluding episode. I never saw it.

What did the mechanic have to do to cure it?
Carburettor cleaning goes wrong - roscopervis
I never actually got to speak properly with the mechanic, but required new spark plugs a tow with the ignition on and fuel pipe closed to clear unburnt fuel and some other mechanical trickery to get it to start.

Good news is that for a 12 year old car purchased for £500 it is a bargain! The running improved dramatically after the cleaning and fuel economy went up from 35 to 37 mpg.(Even more now but thats for another thread) Also, every time I put my foot down I wasn't followed by clouds of grey smoke and hesitancy.
It has had 2 owners from new, both women I believe, and from that episode I can assume neither knew about the benefits of Italian tuning! though was serviced religously at 6k intervals.

I cant imagine it being noything but reliable from the way it drives now.
