Its running again. I havent had a chance to speak to the mechanic who fixed it yet, so I dont know what he did but its running, thats the main thing. Put it in the tank by all means, just not in the carb!
Its a good thing, a day of driving my brothers phase 1 1.4 Clio Rt and I already dislike it a lot!

I did this once many years ago, in the the garage, to a Mk2 Astra - the amount of white smoke that was dumped out of the exhaust was unbelievable - the neighbours thought the house was on fire and nearly called the fire brigade ...

I was a regular user of Redex in the 1960s. Experience tells me that the best place for it is neither in the tank nor the carburettor but in the bottle it came in.
Likewise, I strongly believe that almost all add-on performance and economy gismos work best when left in the box. There may be exceptions but I can't think of any.

Seeing your cooments on the MPG thread reminded me. I watched this thread with some, errrrr, "interest" and waited with baited breath for the concluding episode. I never saw it.
What did the mechanic have to do to cure it?

I never actually got to speak properly with the mechanic, but required new spark plugs a tow with the ignition on and fuel pipe closed to clear unburnt fuel and some other mechanical trickery to get it to start.
Good news is that for a 12 year old car purchased for £500 it is a bargain! The running improved dramatically after the cleaning and fuel economy went up from 35 to 37 mpg.(Even more now but thats for another thread) Also, every time I put my foot down I wasn't followed by clouds of grey smoke and hesitancy.
It has had 2 owners from new, both women I believe, and from that episode I can assume neither knew about the benefits of Italian tuning! though was serviced religously at 6k intervals.
I cant imagine it being noything but reliable from the way it drives now.
