Besides the school run I seem to be increasingly held up by what appears to be lack of fore thought by providers of services or deliveries.Surely the council contractors of refuse collection and street cleaning could avoid the the rush hour on the busiest main throughfares - after all there are plenty of minor roads and side streets. The same goes for convenience stores such as Tesco Metro/Sainsbury Local/etc. Blocking up half the road whilst unloading shows a total lack of consideration for many of your customers an others!

Can you not time your journeys to avoid those same busy times of day ?

After all, what's good for the goose ...

There's several problems here.

Those side streets will be rammed with cars outside working hours, the bin lorry may well not be able to fit down the road with cars parked both sides, the road sweeper will only be sweeping the clean centre of the road.

Small store deliveries, they often haven't got the room for a dedicated loading bank, they often use short double decker trailers, so maneuverable but still carry enough for probably 3 or 4 stores, the RDC might be 100+ miles away, they have to deliver when they can.

I suppose the simple answer is to shut the store and force people to drive to hge purpose built supermarkets, but then that deprives local folk, who may not have transport or may well be getting a bit doddery on their pins, from having a small supermarket close enough for them.

The congestion we all now suffer we voted for, our country is probably 20% overpopulated now and increasing by the day, so this is only going to get worse.

How else are the shops to be serviced, the roads to be swept and the bons to be collected, they can't do all these things between midnight and 6am because enviromental healt often impose restrictions on times of deliveries.

An anecdote for you, one of my colleagues was delivering first thing to a small supermarket at Thamesmead, the locals didn't like the lorries turning up anyway so we used to stop about a mile from the shop and trun the lorry fridge off so we could approach as stealthy as poss, it was an awkward reverse round to the back door anyway right beside a block of flats.

My mate forget to turn the fridge off, and as he's backing round with his head out the window, appropriately enough a domestic fridge falls from the top of the flats and smashes to pieces right beside him, couple of feet closer it would have took his head off.

I got use to being public enema number one when i drove car transporters, you couldn't please anyone delivering to dealerships either.

GB is right - these are all problems of an overcrowded country. Blame those who decided it would be a good idea to import millions of extra bodies here without proper consideration to the impact it would have on an already close to breaking point infrastructure.

If you want councils/businesses to only operate from 10-4, you'll pay a higher rates/price as they'll need more staff and more vehicles to do the same amount of work in a shorter time period.

Or you could move your hours away away from the old 9-5 norm - businesses and leisure outlets are expected to be open 24/7 or a large % - it's about time everyone worked the three-shift system!

There is also the case that many delivery drivers cannot be bothered to park considerately. Near us, we have a Pub, which has a car park with good access for hgv food deliveries.

The delivery drivers (who are contracted to the Pub co by a national distribution firm) can't be bothered to park in the car park and so they park on a yellow line right across the traffic lights (If not on the pavement) and obstruct pedestrians and people who are trying to drive past.

I had complained to the Pubco without success as they always kept returning to their old tricks, Finally after pointing out that i was continually taking photos and emailing them to Colchester parking I pointed out to all concerned that if there was an accident with injury or fatality then they had been warned on multiple occasions that this was dangerous, I happened to mention that they would be held liable and that i would be prepared to give evidence in court for the prosecution.

So far so good, and triple apologies from said Pubco.

The thing people seem to be unaware of is these shops take several deliveries per day. If all the lorries turned up at the same time it would be alot worse.

Most companies have deliveries on time windows so there should in theory only be 1 truck there at a time but, traffic, loading delays, unloading delays can all mean that goes a bit pear shaped at times.

I dont think you can beat the School run for holding everyone up, usualy takes me approx 90 minutes to do a round 8 mile on School run days, while they are off less than 30 minutes

delivery drivers are nowhere near as bad as parents driving, some are terrible parkers!

Why is there a school run? Older generations used to walk to school - and their parents didn't have cars anyway.

That's why the kids walked to school - now the parents have cars and the kids expect to be driven. Also because schools have got bigger, many kids have a lot further to go - and some parents think they are at risk when walking too (they are, from all the traffic ... )

Some parents do not live in the area but put down they do, so they have to give them a lift, at least some people I know have said they live across the road from the school, but actualy live miles away

But certainly traffic is far worse during the school run than any other time, I have not had any real problems with artics or heavy lorries, as long as they are given room to move they are normaly gone in no time

more than can be said for some driving around schools, whom decide to do 19 point turns where its almost impossible to move let alone turn!

Both my children walked to primary / junior school and back every day. My son also walked to secondary school every day for seven years and now uses the bus to get to work whilst waiting to go to Uni. My daughter uses the bus to get to her secondary school every day.

The biggest problem when they were being walked to Junior school were parents in cars "bumping" up the kerb and EXPECTING you to get out of their way whilst parking on the pavement!

Plod used to turn-up occasionally with a big jam-sandwich and all the dayglo gear on show, so everyone behaved.............. why didn't they park the patrol car round the corner and PROSECUTE the offenders?

Not enough of them to do it, around my town they use trafic wardens to frighten drivers away, but it only happens once in a few months
