Peugeot 307 2.0 hdi 110 bhp - Poor fuel economy - 37mpg motorway cruising - Peugeot 307 2004 hdi
Hi wondering if anyone can lend their advice as I am suffering with poor fuel economy 36mpg when cruising at 70mph.

For last 4 months I have been suffering from lack of power, turned out to be be turbo solenoid. Now replaced my power is restored but fuel economy has dropped significantly. From the onboard trip computer I previously averaged 54mpg, I have not changed how I drive and the average is down to 40mpg and falling.

In summary of what I have checked:
-There are no fault codes showing in Peugeot Planet.
- Air filter new
- Tried unplugging MAF but no difference to mpg
- sprayed MAF with contact cleaner
- can't find any split turbo pipes or hear any leaks.
- DPF has recently been jet washed out and not showing as blocked in PP2000
- DPF regent taking place average 600Km, last regen 400Km ago. Elios fluid level 60%
- I can hear turbo kicking in and see waste gate arm moving when revved
- I can see on PP2000 the EGR opening/closing as normal. I have now removed vac pipe from EGR and blocked pipe therefore stopping it opening.
- tried thrashing it
- I have just added bottle of Archoil AR6600 turbo, dpf & cat cleaner
- doser valve is opening

I have bought PP2000 so learning my way around it's functions. Is there anything you suggest I look at that can be compared against normal values?

I have found it hard to find normal values for what Peugeot Planet should be showing for a healthy car but these are the readings I am getting:

+ DPF differential pressure = 35mb driving at 60 mph (I believe to be normal)
+ turbo pressure = 1400 mbars at 60mph (I think this is a little low???)
+ Injector 1 idle = 0.98, 50mph = 0.04, 60mph = -0.5
+ Injector 2. Idle = -2.24, 50mph = - 1.22, 60 mph = -2.6
+ injector 3. Idle = 1.06, 50mph = -0.04, 60mph = 1.14
+ injector 4. Idle = 0.27, 50mph = 1.29, 60mph = 1.6

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Toby

Have you cleaned the turbo compressor? I left my HDi turbo too long (70k) and it made a huge difference.

The Turbo is not accessible hidden at the back of the engine and it would be an engine out job to get at it. So no I have not cleaned the Turbo but have just added a bottle of Archoil Turbo cleaning fluid to the fuel tank so will see if that makes a difference as the tank goes down.

I am sure these simple bottle remedies prommis the world and deliver little but thought it worth a try as a next step.

I thought it worth adding I have owned the car for the past 10 years taking it from 60,000 to current mileage 182,000.
It is driven 80% on the motorway at 70-80mph and has been serviced every 12k miles.
New timing belt in last 6 months.

Sounds as though your symptoms might actually date from when the belt was changed. I see so many stories on this site of trouble arising soon after perfectly good cambelts belts are changed, a recent one was a Focus engine destroyed! Could it be out by one or two teeth? I don't know how you would check it on this engine.

Cam belt done 6 months, turbo solenoid 4 months then mpg issue started so should not be related to belt change.

Unless the OP has got his dates wrong.

And changing a cam belt in line with manufacturers recomendations is essential. Hardly the belt or car manufacturers fault if the muppet changing the belt gets its wrong is it.

Hi, thanks for the thoughts as it has prompted me to check my dates again and I got the two the wrong way around.

To confirm:
Turbo Solenoid: I had problems with no power/Turbo for duration of 6 months up to the point of being fixed two weeks back. I initially replaced the Turbo solenoid as a first attempt to sort this issue but this did nothing...the replacement solenoid turned out to be faulty which I discovered two weeks.

Cam belt - This was changed approx 4 months ago whilst experiencing the lack of power/solenoid issue. If the timing is the cause of poor economy it has been masked by the lack of power/solenoid fault.

Any indication on how to check if the timing is lined up correctly? I will have a look on google and see what I can find.

Thanks

Update on the above I have checked in Peugeot Planet and the Crank/Camshaft Sensor synchronisation is YES. With my limited knowledge this is telling me the timing belt is good?

Injectors #2 and #4 would appear to be off from the other two,

i.e. flowing higher volumes,

I'd be perfoming an injector leak back test myself.

Oh and remember on these cylinder #1 is at the gearbox end.

Not the crank pully end.

Thanks for the info, just googled and will get this done and report back

If this is the 8 valve engine the injectors are generally bomb proof, as is the rest of the engine. If you get very excessive leak off from one it could well be the problem but I have changed injectors twice on these engines as I suspected they were faulty to no avail.

Mine didn't have DPF as they were in a Peugeot 406 and a C5.

It's the RHS engine which I believe to be 8 valve.

Injector Leak Back Results

I used 4 identical 190g jars to collect the diesel.

After approx 10 minutes at idle the jars were full as follows:

injector 1 - 47mm

injector 2 - 58mm

injector 3 - 47mm

injector 4 - 56mm

Do you think that 2 and 4 need refurbishing/ replacing???

Thanks

That's more than ten % off.

10% on your lowest would be less than 52 so your high ones are over that.

I usually suspect any injector with a ten percent flow back from the others.

If moneys tight try S/H,

If memory serves you can swap out two injectors with re coding into the ECU on these.

~But even if not you have PP.

Peugeot 307 2.0 hdi 110 bhp - Poor fuel economy - 37mpg motorway cruising - Peugeot 307 2004 hdi

Thanks for the info... what does S/H stand for???

Peugeot 307 2.0 hdi 110 bhp - Poor fuel economy - 37mpg motorway cruising - hardway

And re looking at your O/P

the troubling injector flow is on injector #2

Flow readings are negative

neg -2.24 at idle,

-1.22 at 50mph and neg-2.6 at 60 mph

so the ECU is subtracting flow from that injector.

Peugeot 307 2.0 hdi 110 bhp - Poor fuel economy - 37mpg motorway cruising - Peugeot 307 2004 hdi

Does that mean that too much fuel is getting through injector no.2 and therfore the ECU is trying to compensate by restricting the flow through it???

Thanks

Peugeot 307 2.0 hdi 110 bhp - Poor fuel economy - 37mpg motorway cruising - hardway

That's what I suspect.

Oh and S/H is second hand or used,

At this point were trying to alter the conditions,

nothing wrong with fitting used parts for that.

So the question is does the used injector alter the flow reading to be closer to the other lower flows.

Remeber it using more fuel than before so a higher flowing/faulty injeector will increase fuel consumption.

Thanks for the explanation, all understood.

I can get reconditioned for £40 so think I will go with that option. Aiming to get it changed over this weekend and will report back.

Thanks for the advice

I had a similar issue with my 90bhp 2L 307. It was my third and could only get a maximum of 480 miles out of a tank, compared to 550+ on my previous ones.

I did all the usual - full service, check with Planet and so on. But it was only when I had the injectors refurbished it was sorted and was then getting 540 miles out of a full tank.

Thanks for the advice. I changed injectors 2 & 4 to be on the safe side. Fuel economy now restored!

Well that's new to me, first faulty injectors I have heard of on that engine - thanks for publishing your findings.
