thats the next option is this the noise a dry gearbox will make?

i dot know what tyre scalloping is but have rotated the tyres and noise in same place

I dont think my tyres are like that so can anybody give me anymore suggestions, i dont believe its a failing gearbox but it could be low on fluid, why i dont know as no leaks.

getting to the headscratching point as just cannot pin point it, trying not ot put it into a garage as started looking at the problem and dont want to give in that easily,

But it was noisey before i changed the driveshafts and yes there was a small amount of fluid that came out.

Is the filler/level plug like a dipstick also?

If it's noisy the damage is already done.... Assuming it's a bearing in the box, then it might quieten down if you refill the oil, but chances are it won't

any more advice on this please, also have videoed the noise but not brilliant but you can hear it, but dont know how to upload onto here?

As a matter of interest,are you sure noise is coming from front, sometimes rear wheel bearings can sound like fronts. Just a thought

my friend has spoke to a mechanic now and he said he has exactly the same problem and did the same as me ie change bearings cv joints etc only to realise that it is the diff bearing? or bearing? in the gearbox and run it till it goes if you can put up with it then change the gear box. but i am pricing a new gearbox at the moment.

could it be anything more than a gearbox before i order a gearbox and new clutch?

About 10yrs ago I had a similar noise just like a worn front wheel bearing but my excellent indy told me it was most unlikely (big Audis don't usually have such problems) even though he agreed it was a very similar noise. His suggestion that it was the tyre(s) was correct.

I think it was the steel mesh embedded in the rubber that was harmonically droning. Perhaps it had been distorted by a pothole. Fortunately they were nearly due for changing and the noise then disappeared. Sorry you have had what sounds like a lot of unnecessary mechanical work done. Do please let us know the outcome.

Have you tried weaving down the road loading up one side of the car and then the other and listening for a difference?

Have you tried differing tyre pressures?

Is the noise changed under braking?

All 4 of your tyres could be similarly afflicted. Are they all the same type/brand?

I had 4 tyres on a VW golf all contributing noise to some extent. My noise was more a subsonic rumble. It was probably caused by years of low mileage use, lots of standing around.

The OP has never said he's checked the gearbox oil level!

it cant be tyres, it is really noisy, too the point i cant hear the engine, a local mechanic had the same problem with his car and changed everything like me and then said his diff bearing has gone and if you can put up with the noise it will keep going. and as far as gear box oil i havent checked but when we changed the drive shaft small amount came out so i know it has some and it wasnt black. but like someone says it could be fluid but the damage has already been done.

Still waiting for quotes from "wecanfixyourcar" but nothing yet. Anybody else tried this online company?
